Greg Kamer – The Mirazon GroupMCSE:2003, MCTS: MOSS 2007, WSS 3.0

Windows Server Administration IIS Experience SQL Experience

◦ You DON’T have to be a DBA!◦ You need to get comfortable with it!

99% of all content in SharePoint is stored in SQL

Fundamentals

SharePoint Structure

ItemsFiles, calendar items, contacts, customers, images, custom

Lists

Doc Lib, Pages, Events, Discussions, Surveys, etc…

Sites/Webs

Internet, Intranet Portal, Wikis, Blogs, Team, Doc, Mtg

Site Collections

The Bag

DatabasesContent, Config, SSP, Search

Web Applications

Central Admin, SSP Admin, Content

Servers

Web Front End, APP, SQL

Farm

Web Front End (WFE) – All versions of SharePoint

Query – Search Server & MOSS Index – Search Server & MOSS Excel Calculation Services – MOSS only

Every role has a design consideration!

Server Roles

Proper planning is the basis of a healthy, well structured farm.

Planning can save you from lengthy and costly re-architecting of your farm

Don’t skimp, take the time!

Planning

Proper planning is essential - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263445.aspx

Consideration ◦ Passwords are cached in a “black hole” ◦ Service accounts passwords cannot just be

changed in the services console.◦ App Pool accounts cannot be changed in just IIS

manager STSADM is your friend http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934838

Service Accounts

…is your friend!!! Backups Import/export Add/Deploy solutions Merge/split databases

STSADM

NTLM◦ Works OOB

Kerberos◦ Requires extra steps to configure◦ SetSPN or ADSIEdit

FBA Anonymous Other

◦ Live Federation◦ ASP.NET

Authentication

Often misunderstood Sole job is to keep links consistent in a web

app/site collection 5 Zones for AAMs Zone names are more for the admin than

actual use*

*Outlook is an exception

Alternate Access Mappings

Most admin work done in Central Admin No SSP to administer

◦ Search Server Express does have an SSP, but not as robust as MOSS

Same code base as MOSS, most web parts, templates, etc can be moved between in most cases

WSS 3.0

Central Admin Click Through

Demo

More features to administer◦ More features = more to learn and administer

Features depend on version◦ Standard – Enterprise Search, Profile Import,

Audiences Reports, Records Management◦ Enterprise – Same as above, but also has BDC,

Excel Services, and Forms Server

MOSS 2007

SSP Click Through

Demo

Are available via the GUI (Operations -> Backup)◦ Are really just database dumps◦ Important for Enterprise search-gets index file and

DB at the same time◦ Not able to be scheduled!

STSADM –o backup◦ Able to be made a scheduled task◦ Can cause table locking issues on DB◦ Not good for large site collections

Third party (AvePoint, Idera, DPM, etc)

Backups

SharePoint native backups not able to restore individual sites, lists, or items (without a lot of hassle!)

Third party tools must be used for that SPD can backup sites…but not the cleanest

way to do it. Recycle Bin – Can save your bacon!

Backups Cont’d

Q&A
