Seminar IM 2010
Dr. B. Van de Walle
Tilburg University
Spring 2010
Short introduction to the seminar
Basic assumption: this is one of your final courses, so you have learned a lot by now
Consequence: no more ‘traditional’ classes in this course
Therefore: hands-on “action-research”-oriented approach
Main approach1. I, and you, will make use of new social media
for class interaction and learning
2. You work in groups on a theme of your choice to produce something interesting using new information technologies
These are the two things you will be graded on
Practically Speaking: social media Join the “Seminar Information Management”
Facebook group. This is a closed group so you won’t expose yourself to the world.
For your personal profile, use a picture on which I can recognize you. You can protect your personal profile as much as you wish – check privacy settings.
Please note: we can’t become “friends” on Facebook till after you graduated. So wait till then to ask me.
Social media - II We will use other social media: Del.ico.us,
slideshare.net, and any others you find useful.
To do: Create a personal account on del.icio.us
To do: Create a personal account on slideshare.net
When tagging, always use “SeminarIM” and a few other relevant tags.
Group Assignment General objective: develop an interesting idea
using new technologies and prepare a “demo” on this to be shown in the last Seminar class
A demo should include some real working technology or proof of concept
Example: crowdsourcing (Cas), social bookmarking (Damir), translation (Erik video)
Group Assignment – II
Assignment is to be done in groups
You must document your group process using video, pictures,… - from the very beginning!
Your must present weekly updates on your group project to the class, using a short (max 5 slides) ppt presentation
You will be very self-regulating – I will not interfere if not absolutely needed
Group Assignment – III - grading
Your assignment will be graded on four deliverables:
1. your group report (to be posted as a google doc)2. A video on your project (to be posted on
youtube)3. A press release about your results 4. Your group presentation in final class
Group Assignment – by next week First something for you individually:
Go to https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pJzOR6HInJs-k0_eIUIfPQA
and complete this short survey there. (You will find this presentation on slideshare.net, so no need to write down the link right now)
Group Assignment – by next week Think of something interesting using new
technologies that you want to explore in this seminar. Post your idea on the Seminar Facebook group.
Invite and find other people who want to work with you on this topic and form a group
Note: groups can consist of about 5 people, but no more than 7. The larger the group, the harder to coordinate among yourselves.
Note 2: once an idea is “taken”, other groups must think of something else…
Group Assignment – by next week II Make a short ppt presenation of 3 slides:
Slide 1: Name of your group (be creative) and names of group members
Slide 2: Initial idea for your group assignment with 2 references to related material (papers, websites, videos,…)
Slide 3: next steps for your group: what will you do next
Upload this presentation on slideshare.net, tag it with “SeminarIM” and other relevant tags (your groupname for instance, …)
Summary of to do’s by next week
1. Sign up on Facebook for Seminar Information Management group
2. Sign up on delicious.com and slideshare.net
3. Tag 5 webpages, documents,… you find interesting, appealing, cool, … and related to IM on delicious.com with keywords “SeminarIM” and at least 3-5 other relevant keywords
