Silhouettes

The History and use of silhouettes.

Silhouettes

What is a silhouette?

Definition: a line that traces the outer

limits of an object or surface

(cartoonists often try to give their

characters recognizable silhouettes).

The term silhouette is well understood

now, though this was not always the

case. Early designations included

"shade," and "profile." Silhouettes were

made freehand and with tracing

devices, by amateurs and professional

artists alike.

Silhouettes

What was a silhouette used for?

Usually for medals and antique coins, but the first silhouettes may have been the profiles made of King William and Queen Mary, produced about 1700.

The medium of early silhouettes was lamp black (soot) on plaster or glass.
