Illuminated only by the light of the silvery moon, thou-sands of runners are expect-ed to turn out for the 23rd annual Moonlight Run at the Palo Alto Baylands Sept. 28.
The event, featuring 10K and 5K runs and a 5K walk, has humble roots. Tom Os-borne, a City of Palo Alto recreation supervisor, found it relaxing to run by moonlight.
Thinking others might enjoy the experience, he discussed organizing a race with col-leagues with the City. The concept was simple. It would be held on the night of a full moon — or close to it.
The result: the first Moon-light Run, which attracted 400 people.
Twenty-three years later, the run/walk is a bona fide Palo Alto tradition that attracts thousands of runners from throughout the Peninsula, along with major sponsors.
However, the Moonlight Run has never lost sight of its original purpose.
“It’s a good family evening,” Osborne told the Weekly in 1993, when the ninth annual race was held.
Inside this section is a schedule, map, last year’s results and photos of past races.
With a pre-race warm-up by Andre Bobo, a kids’ event, climbing wall and plenty of giveaways, this year’s event promises to be as fun asever. ■

2Running for the sportof it
by Lila Razzaqui
L ee Hester developed his passion for long-distance running a bit later than most, taking up the sport at age 40.
But according to the Palo Alto native and founder of Lee’s Comics in Moun-tain View: “Running has changed my life dramatically.”
The sport has given him extra energy and stamina, he said.“I’ve always had a tendency to think that life would become easy,” Hester, 47,
said. “I’m realizing that it’s a constant struggle — you’ve got to put energy in ev-erything you do.”
Hester has participated in the Palo Alto Weekly’s Moonlight Run and Walk twice. On Friday, Sept. 28, he plans to run again, along with his wife, Connie, and twin 11 year olds, Sophie and Hannah.
“I like it because it’s at night and cooler,” he said. Plus it’s a great way to meet local folks, he added.
Hester and Connie took up running seven years ago after buying a couple of dogs and taking them out to exercise. They gradually increased their short route from 1 mile to two to six — until they felt they could almost run the trail forever.
“We would run 14 or even 20 miles at a time,” he said. The couple’s first race was Bay to Breakers in San Francisco — an event that for Hester “was really big.”
By participating in a race, “you try hard to get a good time because it’s recorded,” he said. And a recorded time allowed him to track his progress, he added.
Many people feel too intimidated to take up running, but the real challenge is getting over the negative messages in one’s head and using positive ones to get through the sport’s challenging moments, Hester said. It’s about discipline and self-control.
“You’ve got to get over the impulse to stop and chug along like a machine,” he said.
Before running long distance, he went to the health club regularly. “But money got tight, and I canceled my membership,” he said. “I went running
on the trail — that’s free.” For him, running outdoors is almost a form of meditation.
(continued on page 33)
The Hester family runs a third lap around the lake at Coyote Creek Park in San Jose earlier this month. The avid running family — (from left) Hannah, Lee, Sophie, Connie and their dogs, Humphrey and Molly (not pictured) — plans to participate in this year’s Moonlight Run and Walk. Lee Hester founded Lee’s Comics of Mountain View.

“Running six or seven miles usually takes me an hour,” he said. It’s a solid hour he uses to reflect, plan and do some deep thinking. You don’t do much of that in a health club, he said.
“If you run six miles in the morning, the rest of the day will be easier no matter what the chal-lenges are,” Hester said.
And the rewards of long-dis-tance running have been amaz-ing, from staying in shape to keeping his weight down, he said. With the discipline involved, oth-er things seem easier — includ-ing the challenges of raising his twins, he said.
The girls participate in an an-nual fun run at their school in San Jose.
“We are some of the few par-ents that run out there with their kids,” Hester said. “I think kids should be in shape — the trick is for adults to be fit like a kid.”
Connie coaches a program called Girls on the Run — a men-toring program that brings young girls together with athletes to learn running techniques and vir-tues like courtesy and patience.
“It’s a nice thing,” said Hester, whose daughters both participate in the program. It offers a social
element to running for the girls, he said.
And while Hester usually runs alone, he’ll occasionally run with a group and his family. He and his wife have done runs together.
But “I’m very competitive. ... I always endeavor to cross the line before her — because I’m a stink-er,” he added, laughing.
And while Hester had to give up running for a few months this year due to a back injury, coming back to it has been easier than he expected.
“I was out of condition (for a while) with my back and I started again,” he said. “But I had the mental training — just getting over that impulse to stop.”
As for the best experience he’s had at the Moonlight Walk and Run?
“Seeing Connie win third prize one year,” he said.
“And working hard at being nearly beaten by a 10-year-old boy whose shoe fell off,” he add-ed with a laugh. The boy was run-ning with only one shoe on — and holding the other in his hand. ■

Palo Alto ‘Walksand Rolls’
Oct. 1 to 6 has been designated as the week to bike, walk and take mass transit
A coalition of health, transportation, environmental, business and neighborhood groups is sponsoring a weeklong cam-paign to promote walking, biking and alternative transporta-
tion in Palo Alto.Oct. 1-6 has been designated as “Palo Alto Walks and Rolls”
week. Its kick-off will be held at the Palo Alto Moonlight Run and Walk on Sept. 28. County Supervisor Liz Kniss and Palo Alto Mayor Yoriko Kishimoto, among others, will be on hand to launch the campaign.
The week’s events will include “Walk and Roll to School” aimed at children and their parents, with various activities held at local schools; “Walk and Roll to Lunch,” which will encourage local employees and residents to walk, bike or take transit to their midday meal at least once during the week; a “Walkability Workshop” for neighborhood groups; and a “Community Walk and Roll” along the Ellen Fletcher Bike Boulevard (Bryant Street) on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The campaign’s goal is to double or triple the habit of walking and biking in Palo Alto and create a “tipping point” of cultural change, organizers say.
This is the first in a series of events building up to the Amgen Tour of California Overall Start in February 2008. ■

Earn up tp $600 from home Hello Sir/Ma,
Would you be interested in a home job that allows you to earn up to $600 per month? No start up fees, no “envelope stuffing” nonsense.
The job we offer will not affect your present career, it will only take a small part of your time. The only things you need to have to start running your business with our company are reliable Internet/E-mail access and checking/savings bank account. And of course your decency and willing-ness to earn.
The first vacancy is Transfer manager: Ref: Transman2007The nature of the job is payment pro-cessing. It is related to online banking operating the funds from either our company or our partners to designated bank account approved by our manager keeping specified money transaction fee as a commission for your services (usually between $150 to $500, no less than $150 per transfer).
You will receive the funds which our customers/resellers send directly to you and forward it to us or our agents (less your commission)via one of cho-sen money transfer agencies. The job is rather simple and you won’t need any special knowledge to become our partner, though we do require that you are able to act on a very short notice. We can afford to pay such a decent commission only because we keep our customers happy with our promptness.
For those who look for career opportu-nities it’s a chance of becoming a part of our team in the future (based on your performance), team in which you will be highly respected and decently rewarded - just think about this! We will be hoping to hear from you soon. For more infor-mation email:deanneernest@aol.com
