OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM APPROVAL PROCESS

The process has been designed to ensure:

• consistency with UQ’s academic and strategic priorities

• incorporation of appropriate learning experiences, teaching and evaluation methods and graduate attributes

• QA procedures are embedded in each stage of program development

• the quality and integrity of the program meets the highest academic standards within an established T&L policy framework

• appropriate notification of proposed changes

• consultation with relevant academic and administrative units, external and accreditation bodies

• compliance with relevant legislation, such as the ESOS Act.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF APPROVAL PROCESS

• Program approvals involve a 2 committee structure: USMC and CAPP

• CAPP’s role reflects policy oversight and quality assurance

• PSC’s role is mainly compliance scrutiny

• Sequence of submissions - designed to allow faculties to obtain necessary approval before a proposal is submitted to next stage of process.

• Committees only consider information relevant to their role.

University Senior Management Committee (USMC)

USMC considers notification of new and major program initiatives.

– Considers the strategic aspects of new and major program initiatives prior to the development of more detailed academic aspects of the programs.

Committee for Academic Programs Policy (CAPP)

Role of CAPP

• a Committee of the Academic Board

• policy oversight

• to consider and advise Academic Board on matters of educational significance, including:• Faculty submissions for new and major

academic program proposals• development of academic policies

Programs Sub-Committee (PSC)

Role of PSC

• compliance scrutiny, routine and primarily administrative nature

• nomenclature amendments

• changes to program rules

• courses to be offered in non-standard teaching periods and variations to the Academic Calendar

SINGLE STAGE SUBMISSIONS

Required for:

• program/field discontinuation (CAPP/Executive Deans concurrently)

• nomenclature amendment (PSC)

• new dual program from existing programs (CAPP)
