Biography Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1946

Studied Studio Art & Art History at Smith College in from 1964-68

Went to graduate school at the University of Iowa. Studied Filmmaking, Intaglio Printmaking and Multimedia Art

Moved to New York City in 1972, started working as a conceptual artist

Taught herself photography to capture conceptual ideas

Movement

Symbolizes people’s subconscious fears.

Underlying thoughts and feelings.

Large and Bright.

ProcessSkoglund creates intricate scenes for the images she creates.

Some take months to make. She successfully experiments with a variety of themes. She mixes artificial objects with natural objects.

Skoglund has to work around availability of materials as sometimes her ideas require more than what is manageable.

Description of WorkSkoglund’s intention is to trigger discomfort and self reflection in her work.

No matter how seductive or loopy her materials, imagery, or implied narrative is, she’s is always focused on the production of metaphors that reflect human fear and vulnerability.

She challenges her audience to look past the surface pattern, and try to find the essense of the work.
