CONGRATULATIONS PASTOR GREG
ON YOUR FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
Pastor Greg, Rebecca and Sam Huguley were welcomed to First Baptist
Church, following the Baptist tradition, with a wonderful spread of food in the
Fellowship Hall on Sunday, January 7, 2007.
FAST FORWARD FIVE YEARS - continued below
Some things change a lot - like Sam and the quality of pictures!
Then some things never change - notice the cups of coffee. On
Pastor Greg’s first Sunday he started his sermon with the picture to
the right. - We were not sure if he was coming or leaving.
Pastor Greg was honored on Sunday morning, January 29, 2012, for his five years of
service with very appropriate gifts. One for each of the five years he has served at FBC.
1. One Pound of Starbuck’s Coffee; 2. A long “Honey Do” list from Rebecca; 3. A very
large comb for all of his hairs on his head; 4. A “Day at the Spa” gift (This is really for
Rebecca to keep her happy); 5. A large trophy with the church logo in the middle, a
wrestler on the top, and a message “Five Years of Service - Senior Pastor FBC Elgin
2012”. The trophy is proudly displayed in his office at FBC. Pastor Greg has been a lot
of different people in the five years he has been with us. Take a look below.

PARTICIPATING GROUPS IN THE MINISTRY FAIR 2012:
If you missed the Ministry Fair this time, you missed a time of fun, fellowship and
learning. Next time be sure to come and see what is happening at FBC. There is no pressure for you to sign up for anything. Some of the people asked questions which
made your mind begin to think, what am I doing now and what could I be doing? Maybe the answer is nothing right now, but some time in the future you may be
looking for somewhere to serve.

WORKFORCE
On Sunday morning, January 15, 2012, members and friends had the opportunity to come to the Fellowship
Hall and see some of the ministries happening here at FBC. Also, they may have found a place where they
could serve using their gifts and abilities, while having donuts and coffee or sampling the goodies offered
at some of the tables.
One lady remarked, “Now, I know why God had me move all the
to Elgin from a warmer climate to
help me find where I belong and
what I can do to serve Him!” This
lady has a special needs daughter and
When she saw the Conquerors table,
she knew that is what she could do
to serve God and others. She had a

UPDATE ON BINKLEY’S MISSION TO THE KAREN TRIBAL PEOPLE By Judy DeRolf
Duane and Marcia Binkley have had many changes to
their ministry and living situation in recent days. First of all, they have changed their living situation
from Ohio to Kansas in order to be close to Central Baptist Theological Seminary where they will be working
with the Karen immigrant pastors to get more semi-nary training. They are help-
ing to organize classes to give the pastors from Burma who are serving immigrant congre-gations the opportunity for
further theological training in their languages (Karen, Chin, Burmese). The idea is to have
these classes in various loca-tions around the country where church leaders can more easily attend classes one weekend
per month. They will receive a certificate from the Seminary after completing the full pro-gram of ten classes. They are
in the process of enlisting the instructors and hope to hold the first classes beginning in
March. Besides moving to Kansas in order to begin an additional
ministry in working with the Karen people in the U.S., the Binkleys have become empty
nesters as their third child, Shannon, began her college life at Indiana Weslyan University last fall. Erin is a second year
student at Judson and their eldest, a son, Sean, will be returning to the states this fall after a two-year stint working
and living in Egypt. Many changes are taking place in their lives as they continue to
faithfully serve our Lord and Savior.
With the new year of 2012, we enter into an exciting three-year period of celebration
within our ABC denomination. Starting this year, American Baptist International Ministries
(IM) will begin celebrating 200 years of global mission. IM will kick off the three-year anniver-sary with a huge 7-day World
Mission Conference (WMC) May 18 -25, 2012. The World Mission Conference will be held at the Green Lake Conference
Center in Green Lake, Wiscon-sin. The 2012 conference, which will include a 3-day call
retreat, focuses on discerning God’s call to Christian service and how to make that call a reality. The theme for 2012 is
“Mission 3: Hear the Call”. (For more information visit: www.internationalministries.org
/read/38513-may-2012-hear-the-call). We are hoping First Baptist, Elgin will participate in this wonderful opportunity only
three hours from here. Talk to Chuck DeRolf for more informa-tion on this conference.
Moving forward into 2013, International Ministries will be
providing information about significant celebrations in Myanmar (Burma). Baptists in
Myanmar are inviting American
Baptists to their country to share in bicentennial celebra-
tions. Two hundred years ago, in 1813, American Baptist missionaries Adoniram and Ann Judson
arrived in Burma as the first Protestant missionaries from North America. June 21-23, 2013, American Baptists in
the U.S. and Puerto Rico will gather in Overland Park, KS for the ABC Biennial meeting.
IM will bring its global mission-ary focus to the Biennial meet-ing, celebrating the missionary service of the Judsons, under
the theme of “Mission 3: Em-brace the Cause!” There will be many brothers and sisters
from Burma participating in the Biennial program as well.
As we look forward to these celebrations in the next two or three years, let us not forget
our past and all that has been done in the mission movement around the world over the last two-hundred years. There is
still much to do in sharing the gospel around the world and in our own backyard. How to do it
well, is not easy, but this is what First Baptist is striving to do. The Binkleys and the support of their work is one
way in which we are participat-ing in the sharing of the gospel with our newest immigrant community, the Karen people.
The Binkleys have only 73% out of the 100% they need for their financial support of which
First Baptist supports them with $3,600 from our annual mission budget. Please pray for the Binkleys and for the
many activities that are being planned to celebrate the 200 years of mission work.

Philemon is between Titus and Hebrews in the New Testament and is
one chapter long. Paul, the apostle, wrote this book around A.D. 60 during Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome, at about the same time Ephesians and Colossians were written. Paul’s purpose in writing this book was to
convince Philemon to forgive his runaway slave, Onesimus , and to accept him as a brother in his faith. The setting of Philemon was that slavery was very common in the Roman Empire, and evidently some Christians had slaves. Paul does not
condemn the institution of slavery in his writings, but he makes a radical statement by calling this slave Phile-mon’s brother in Christ.
This small book is a masterpiece of grace and tact and a profound demon-stration of the power of Christ and of
true Christian fellowship in action. What barriers are in your home, neighborhood, and church? What separates you from fellow believers? Is it race? status? wealth? education? personality? As with Philemon, God
calls you to seek unity, breaking down those walls and embracing your broth-ers and sisters in Christ.
Philemon is a private, personal letter to a friend.
White Cross Work Day Wednesday March 14, 2012 in room 32-31, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. We will cut quilt blocks, make roller bandages and fill school

This is a special day to make items needed by our missionaries in the field. The women enjoy their visiting and accomplishing needs for the field.
February Health Kit Month Health Kits are used in the US and around the world. They are given to people who have been in a disaster as hurricanes, fires, floods, etc.

example you and a friend could work on a kit together. These kits will help to maintain better health care for them.

or bath towels

kits will be packed and mailed to Church World Service in Maryland. Thank you for caring for the people.
First we need your help with items for the kits. The second need is money for postage. They ask us to give $2.00 per kit for final destination postage. Any amount from $.25 on up will help us to accomplish this . Please put your dona-
tion in an envelope with Health Kits/ABW on it and place it in the offering plate or take it to the office.

God Knew Our Greatest Need If our greatest need
had been information, God would have sent us
an educator.
If our greatest need had been technology,
God would have sent us a scientist.
If our greatest need had been money,
God would have sent us an economist.
If our greatest need had been pleasure,
God would have sent us an entertainer.
But our greatest need was forgiveness,
so God sent us a Saviour.

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and
complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday... "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time
I have heard something like 203,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm
wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."
This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column,
much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until some-one wrote this clincher:
"I've been married for 30 years
now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one
of those meals. But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to
do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would
be physically dead today. Like-wise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When
you are DOWN to nothing... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the in-credible and receives the impos-
sible! Thank God for our physi-cal AND our spiritual nourish-ment!
IS IT A WASTE OF TIME? Taken from an e-mail sent to the Editor.

ABWM - Continued
A Search for the Top Ten Bible Gateway, an online Bible resource, looked at the viewing
habits of some of their 8 million monthly visitors. They found that John 3:16 was the most-searched-for verse in 2010.
I don’t think it’s surprising that it would be number one on the list. It tells us that God loved us so much
that He sent his Son to rescue us from our sin and give us everlasting life. Number 10 on the list is Jesus’ commission to His followers to spread that good news: “Go there-fore and make disciples of all the
nations” (Matt. 28:19). Also in the top 10 are Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28 about God’s good plans and purposes for His people.
The Scriptures are filled with truths to search out and share. In Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible,
the psalmist shared his thoughts about the Word and his desire to search it and be taught by God. He said, “Oh, how I love Your law!” (v.97). Our Bible reading for today shows some of the psalmist’s reasons for loving it: It gives him
wisdom and understanding, it restrains his feet from evil, and it is sweet. Therefore, it’s his meditation “all the day.”
Let’s keep taking the time to read the Bible. The more we search the
Word, the more we’ll grow in our love for it and the Author V.97). ---Anne Cetas

FBC Mission Statement
To reach out with God’s love to all people and
help them find and follow Jesus Christ.
FBC Vision
The vision of First Baptist Church is to be a dynamic hub of Christian thought, action, and community… • Where seeking friends can feel safe to ask tough questions as they investigate the Christian faith and discover
answers in their spiritual quest for a relationship with God. • Where those who have experienced brokenness, pain, and loss can find healing and wholeness as offered in
Jesus Christ and can be nurtured in their faith in an atmosphere of unconditional love and support. • Where God’s Word is communicated in a variety of ways demonstrating its relevance in speaking to the chal-
lenges and opportunities of life in the 21st century. • Where everyone is growing in their knowledge and understanding of the scriptures, and in their obedience to
them. • Where everyone is connected through meaningful, supportive relationships in small groups and other ministry
connections. • Where everyone is growing in the understanding of their spiritual giftedness and is actively engaged in a minis-
try of sharing their talents with the church family and community. • Where we seek to grow in our unique role as a church family in the Fox Valley by interacting in the life of the
community, ministering to the poor, promoting racial reconciliation, and employing new and creative ways of sharing Jesus Christ with those around us.
