WORD OF OUR LORD
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Moses directs the people to observe the commandments of the Lord (Deuteronomy 4:1-8). Psalm — The one who does jus ce will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading — Welcome the word that you have received and become doers of the word, not hearers only (James 1:17-27). Gospel — You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradi on (Mark 7:1-23).
SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES
Sunday: Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Wednesday: World Day of Prayer for the Care of Crea on Friday: St Gregory the Great ; First Friday Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday
DOERS OF THE WORD
The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selec ons from James, a le er that is classified among the so-called “catholic” (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one par cular community. Today’s text offers important advice for Chris ans of every genera on. God is first cited as the author of all gi s, and in par cular, reference is made to the gi of bap sm by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new crea on. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the “word” as an ac ve force, opera ve in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their afflic on.” © J. S. Paluch Co.

September 1st marks the anniversary of
Pope Francis' call for Catholics to observe
the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Crea on. According to Pope Francis, “The annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Crea on offers
individual believers and communi es a fi ng opportunity to reaffirm their personal voca on to be stewards of crea on, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which He has entrusted to our care. We
implore His help for the protec on of crea on as well as His pardon for the sins commi ed against the world in
which we live. Let us pray on September 1st, and indeed throughout the year.”
Oh God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgo en of this earth, who are so precious in Your
eyes. God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of Your love for all the creatures of this earth.
God of mercy, may we receive Your forgiveness and convey Your mercy throughout our common home.
Praise be to You! Amen.
SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT Gregory was the prefect of Rome before he was 30. A er five years in office he resigned, founded six monasteries on his Sicilian estate and became a
Benedic ne monk in his own home at Rome. Ordained a priest, Gregory became one of the pope's seven deacons, and also served six years in the East as papal representa ve in Constan nople. At the age of 50, he was elected pope by the clergy and people of Rome. Gregory was direct and firm. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many services, emp ed the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards and to care for persecuted Jews and the vic ms of plague and famine. He is known for his reform of the liturgy and for strengthening respect for doctrine. His devo on to the Liturgy earned him the associa on with “Gregorian” chant, even though he probably knew li le music. His book, Pastoral Care, on the du es and quali es of a bishop, was read for centuries a er his death. He described bishops mainly as physicians whose main du es were preaching and the enforcement of discipline. In his own down-to-earth preaching, Gregory was skilled at applying the daily Gospel to the needs of his listeners. Called “the Great,” Gregory has been given a place with Augus ne, Ambrose, and Jerome, as one of the four key doctors of the Western Church.
