Parish Mission Statement
We are a Catholic Christian community striving to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. Nourished by the Eucharist and enlightened by the Word of God, our Pastor, Parish Staff and Parishioners welcome all. With faith in His Gospel, we are
called to love as Jesus loves and, therefore, serve our community through the sharing of time, talents and treasure to support programs of evangelization and social justice. Our commitment encompasses serving the youth through education, sports and formation. We seek to develop services for the elderly and homebound. Finally, we wish to
challenge and sustain all parishioners through spiritual and educational activities.

A Note from the Pastor From the Director of Music Ministry
Dear Parishioners,
“And we are off….”
That is correct, the new Pastoral
Year has begun (September 1st—
August 31st), and we are off to a
new start. With every new start
comes about change. I know that
change can be a little difficult to digest. However, if we want
to advance in our spirituality and grow in our relationship with
God, then we should be comfortable being uncomfortable. In
other words, change, good change, should be our daily focus.
We should be asking ourselves daily, “What are You (God),
asking me to change in my life?” Is He inviting us to be more
forgiving, merciful, loving and kind…?
As we begin our new pastoral year, immediately we are
confronted with change; namely, we have new clergy with us
which means new ideas, new recommendations, new spiritual
insights and new beginnings. However, these are all good
changes, trust me!
In addition, there are many changes happening in my life;
namely, I will return to academics, just not teaching but
studying. I am going to be a student again! Just when I
thought I was done being a student...God laughed at that and
He has different plans. Please pray for my professors! I tend to
be very inquisitive. I begin my classes after Labor Day and I
will be taking four graduate level classes. I will be in class
(virtual) three days a week. I ask you to please be patient with
me as I begin to balance my pastoral responsibilities, which
will always be my first priority, with my academics and three
other responsibilities. This is a change and a challenge, but I
know my staff, clergy and you will make it happen, and we will
accept these new changes/challenges head on and rise to the
occasion.
I think the words of the Prophet Isaiah in today’s first reading
really provides us with much comfort and confidence, “ Say to
those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not!” Then
the exultation from Jesus in today’s Gospel from Mark which
graces us with newness and confidence, “ “Ephphatha!”— “Be
opened!”
I hope you are filled with as much joy as I have for our new
beginnings. There is so much happening here at St. Kevin and
please, share this good news with your family, friends and
neighbors and invite them to share in our joy!
In the Good Shepherd,
Fr. Robert Mema
Our “Welcome Back Concert”
The city of New York is returning to live entertainment! Broadway is reopening! Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall are reopening! I’m singing live on 9/11 with the National Chorale and United States Army Chorus! So, we want to celebrate all this with a “Welcome Back” concert of live music here at St. Kevin’s church on Sunday, September 19th at 4:00 pm. To show our support of Fr. Robert returning to school at St. Paul University to study canon law and to celebrate schools reopening, we’re showcasing some of New York City’s most talented students who are going back to school in person this fall. Did you see the virtual concert we made last winter? If not, you can find it on YouTube under St. Kevin RC Church “Concert of Faith, Hope & Love.” On it, Adam Bueno, who is starting his freshman year at the Special Music School High School at Lincoln Center, plays “Baroque and Blue” from Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio. He’s going to play that again, along with another movement. Evan Katsefes is attending Manhattan School of Music, a private music conservatory. From Whitestone, Queens, he’s a classically trained tenor studying opera. If you came to the 9:00 am Mass on June 3rd, our Feast Day, he was the cantor who sang the beautiful rendition of “Lady of Knock.” And we’re fortunate to welcome Grace Capeless, who is starting her senior year at Immaculate Heart Academy. Grace has appeared on Broadway in The Lion King; Matilda; Radio City Music Spectacular and A Christmas Story the Musical. She’s also got several film and television appearances. So you see, this 45-minute concert will have a little something for everyone! Classical, jazz, Broadway and spiritual! Bring your friends and your families! Our church is large enough that you can spread out and enjoy live music safely. And following the concert, you can meet and greet the performers with some “after school” snacks! And you can get an “A” just for attending!
