Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This is the week in Term 3 where the Year 9 Commerce and Year 8 Entrepreneurship lessons
culminate in a Market Day. They have been working tirelessly towards this outcome all term
and their marketing and advertising strategies have been innovative and have captured the
imagination of the entire school. The platform of showing their advertisements in assembly in
preparation for the big day proved very popular and the standard of their ads was exception-
al. Liz Clarence and Ruchika Sahai are to be congratulated on a successful day enjoyed by
all. In their words “the students absolutely blew our minds away with their enthusiasm, organi-
sation, creativity and team work in both year groups. We cannot wait to share their stories with
you all in the newsletter next week.”

With the debating seasons coming to an end in Term 2, Mr. Compton together with the passionate
participants decided to continue honing their skills by entering into the Tournament of Minds Com-
petition. Their coach Jesse Hancock submitted the following report on this amazing tournament:
“It’s no secret that Reddam is filled with some very talented performers, mathematicians, problem
solvers and leaders. However, it’s rare to find opportunities where all these skills are tested all at
once in a 3x3m square. Tournament of Minds is exactly that challenge.
Students have to assemble a team of seven, two from Year 7 and no more than three students from
any other grade. Armed only with a rulebook the size of a dictionary, a handful of recycled materi-
als and six weeks they must build a machine to solve a set, previously undisclosed problem. They
are allowed no outside help. They must then perform their solution over 10 minutes to a panel of
three judges in an engaging fictional drama piece that explains their machine.
Reddam submitted three teams to the regional finals last Sunday, two teams from the Junior School
led by Mr Anthony Shepherd and one from the senior school led by Mr. Jesse Hancock. All teams
did a spectacular job on the day with our senior team coming second in the regional final.
Everyone’s unique skills shone on the day, from the creative high energies of Aiden Katz and Aidan
Ruvinsky, Gili Levy’s amazing script writing and stage craft, Aaron Lieberfreund’s brilliant analytical
mind and finally the Kapsanis brothers whose nurturing leadership brought all these skills and age
groups together as a cohesive team. Congratulations to everyone involved, I couldn’t have been
prouder of you all.”
Every year our school enters students in the Australian Economics and Business Studies Competi-
tions. Our students have done exceptionally well and been awarded with cash prizes and received
acknowledgement from UNSW who host the competition. Congratulations to Cynthia Lai, Daniel
Rotenstein, Jared Silbermann, Bryana Bailey and Kim Choi on their success in this competition.
This term Year 8 Art students have studied Post Modernism. This unit was a great hit with each stu-
dent choosing an artist of style of art to compose a painting using acrylic paints. Shoes turned into
the canvas they painted on which created a fabulous 3D surface.

Markus Zusak, author of 'The Book Thief' talks to Year 8
On Thursday 2nd September Year 8 were excited to welcome Markus Zusak to school. Markus Zusa-
k's visit to our school was a real privilege and honour. It's not every day you get to meet such an
amazing author with stories to tell and share. He gave us an insight in to his childhood which includ-
ed getting his mother so fired up he was often beaten with a wooden spoon and playing the
greatest prank on his brother. He had a great sense of humour and was a captivating speaker. He
answered all of our questions about "The Book Thief" in great depth and surprised many of us with
some of his answers. I think I speak for all of Year 8 when I say this was an awesome experience
and I'm so glad we were able to meet him.

YEAR 8 ENGLISH
@REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 27, Friday 09 September 2016 Page 6
Year 11 Drama has spent the term exploring the 20th Century development of Surrealism in theatre,
and how the form and style has impacted our theatre today. At its heart lies a preoccupation with
the irrational and hidden side of human experience – our dreams and nightmares, our subcon-
scious mind and deepest emotions.
On Wednesday afternoon Year 11 Drama students certainly did that! They took us into our ‘dream
worlds’ where chaos and absurdity dominate, challenging our understanding of reality. The two 8-
minute performances looked at perspectives of ‘Vanity’ and the ‘Sleep Cycle’ (our dreams and
nightmares).
The students were outstanding in their commitment to the concepts and techniques of the form.
They performed to an audience of 40 Year 9-11 students as well as teachers. It’s always a wonder-
ful opportunity to perform for peers and experience the unique actor/audience relationship of a
live audience. Especially when it is such a receptive and supportive audience, as was Wednes-
day’s.
