The RHAP Awards Evening on Wednesday at UNSW Science Theatre was the celebration of the successes enjoyed by our students in the performing arts, pub-lic speaking and visual arts. The Art exhibition in the foyer set the scene for what was to be a wonderful evening of entertainment giving the audience a taste of what had been done on stage during the course of 2014. Congratulations to all the teachers involved in these fields. The evening of entertainment was of the highest calibre and Dr. McGregor needs to be singled out for coordinating the entire evening. On a completely different level, the Halloween Dance on Tuesday evening saw the students really get into the spirit with the best dressed awards being hotly contested. The Year 9 students together with Ms. Dignan and Mrs. O’Carroll transformed the Adelaide Hall into a haunted house for the evening. DJs Broyda and Rosen always provide a fantastic atmosphere, with their collection of lights, lasers, smoke machines and great music. All monies raised at this event go to the Reddam International Community Service Drive. Mrs Friedman, who is responsible for the organisation, getting staff and students engaged, reflected with much pride on the success of the evening.

Thursday evening saw the Minor Finals of the Interschool’s Theatre Sports competition held at Scots College. Our team of Isabella Page, Elliot Gibson, Catherine Gu, Mikki Dunkel and Kai Mashimo competed with energy and enthusiasm and we certainly look forward to their development in this new extra-curricular activity introduced by Mrs. Crompton. Congratulations to Eden Riley who won the Intermediate Division of the Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition. Have a happy week, Dave Pitcairn.

Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition Last Friday evening, Year 9 student Eden Riley competed in the Intermediate Division (Years 9 and 10) of the Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition held at Scots College. Students were required to present a five minute prepared speech and then given three minutes to prepare a speech on an impromptu topic. The topic given was “Global and Local” and Eden spoke eloquently and convincingly about the Ebola Virus. Against extremely tough competition, I am thrilled to report that she was announced the overall winner and we are especially proud of her considering this was her first ever Public Speaking competition!

Reddam House Public Speaking Competition Our annual Reddam House Public Speaking Competition will take place on Monday

10th November at 7pm. Finalists are being selected from Years 7 – 9 where all students

have been required to present a prepared speech on topics of their own choice. The

top 10 – 12 speakers in each grade will be invited to compete for the Reddam House

Public Speaking trophy. Finalists will be confirmed by next Wednesday and the lists will

be posted outside my classroom on level 4.1 as well as published in the newsletter next

week. While I know this has been a busy time for Reddam parents and students,

anyone who enjoys listening to TED talks, or watching inspirational You Tube

clips – this is the place to be. Please join us to listen to some highly entertaining and

inspirational speeches delivered by very impressive young people.

Over the School Holidays, Daniel Rotenstein (Year 10) was one of eight students from around Australia chosen to participate in a Work Experience Program at RAAF Base East Sale (Victoria). Daniel spent a week on the base learning about many RAAF roles including life as a RAAF pilot, air battlefield, air space command, weapons, engineering and participating in the gruelling fitness training program. Daniel came back tired, but exhilarated by the experience.

On 25

th October, Daniel was a volunteer checkpoint radio operator for the Hawkesbury

Canoe Classic, an annual fundraising event involving hundreds of canoes and kayaks travelling down the Hawkesbury. Daniel, a licensed amateur radio operator, set up radio equipment and a campsite by the river, then radioed canoe position reports until midnight. These reports were important for the safety of the competitors, so that any overdue canoes could be searched for and to organise first aid for canoeists in trouble. This is the third year in a row Daniel has performed this community service. Well done Daniel!!

Hot pot (火锅,huŏ guō) is also known as steamboat. The Chinese hot pot has a history

of more than 1000 years. The most popular hot pot nowadays has two sectioned bowls with two different flavoured broths in each section. The Year 10 Chinese Continuers and the Year 12 Chinese Background Speakers had a Chinese hot pot lunch on Monday at the Bondi campus. While appreciating the Chinese food and culture, students had the chance to take part in a language exchange, talking in both of their first and second languages. Chinese Teacher Melody Wu
