Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Sunday was nothing short of a magical day showcasing the Reddam Way. Along with the spectacular weather, the attendance by the wider community was fantastic. The school looked outstanding with stimulating classrooms, exciting activities, varied entertainment and wonderful performances from our talented students. The student tour guides were great ambassadors for the school. The collective impact was incredible. My thanks go to all the staff and students, who worked so hard to make this day the success it was. I hope all who attended felt pride at being part of this very vibrant and unique school. I certainly did. Congratulations to Sam Newton, who competed in the Lead Climbing World Youth Cup last week and Australia managed to gain the best result the team has ever posted. Unfortunately none of the team made it through to the semifinals but they had a fantastic competition, gaining a huge amount of international climbing experience. Congratulations to Michael Sharp, JJ Collins and Jesse Walker who represented UNSW Wests Water polo during the winter water polo competition. They played in the winning team in last week’s Grand Final.

Gabe Gaspirinatos represented Reddam at the launch of the REELise Film Festival. This initiative of the Woollahra Council, NSW Police Force, Black Dog Institute and Community Creators targets cyberbullying. Join the REELise Revolution and take a stand. The cyberbully’s weapon of choice is often the mobile phone. If you are 12-18 years old and reside in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, you can participate in a free filmmaking program commencing in the September school holidays. Find some of your fellow students or friends to form a film crew. Mr. Johnson is the Reddam contact person should any student be interested. Register your crew by 13th September 2013 at www.reelise.org.au Last Friday the Middle School had the great experience of having Adam Katz (Reddam class of 2006) come and perform some of his current hit songs for the students. It is such a treat to have past students who have made it in their field coming back to the school and inspiring our students to follow their dreams and to serve as real role models of what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. In assembly last week I shared Aston Kutcher’s advice to teenagers in his acceptance speech for the Teen Choice Awards. The gist of it is that the best way to be sexy is to be smart, thoughtful and generous and that opportunity most often looks like hard work and caring. The senior school has been so quiet this week with the Year 11 and Year 12 students continuing with their examinations and the Year 10 students enjoying their Ski Camp at Thredbo.

SOCCER

This weekend DB Live, a new event, set up by the Double Bay Chamber of Commerce and the live music venue Blue Beat takes place. This event has been created in order to bring the beat back into Double Bay on the weekends. The event consists of up and coming music acts and is being held at the Rotunda in Guilfoyle Park. Avital Greenberg will be appearing as a special guest. Good luck Avital.

D O E students! I have provisionally booked a very exciting practice trip for the 4th to the 6th October. The trip is called a pack and paddle trip. Following is a basic description of what you will be doing: Make your way to Kangaroo valley (I can organize a bus if there are enough

numbers, but carpooling is probably the best option to keep the cost down)

Once at Kangaroo Valley (meet the group and organize yourselves) you canoe (while enjoying the views and company) to your camp site pitch your tent and relax for the evening (campfire songs optional!!)

The next morning fresh as a daisy, you up roots and walk with a spring in your

step to your next destination and set up camp again that evening. (That night I would suggest card games-the campfire songs can get a bit annoying!!)

The next morning, ready for more-you canoe to your final destination where

your loving parents will be waiting to truck your happy but slightly weary bodies home for a lovely big dinner and cozy sleep!

The camp stove, tents, fuel, canoe, buoyancy aids etc. will all be supplied. If you do not have waterproof jackets and trousers-these can be hired. It should be a really fun trip and a bit more interesting than the usual hiking. I have booked a Practice Silver trip for 14 students– so first come first served. However depending on how numbers work -I may have to change it to Gold (extra day) If any of your friends are interested in doing this trip and/or The Duke Of Ed-let me know and I’ll get them signed up! Stress Free HSC Sessions

This year, we'll be running additional Stress Free HSC info sessions, helping students prepare for their HSC. These sessions will be run by a qualified Councillor and Holistic Life Coach. Encourage your students to attend the morning session to go into the draw to win free passes to HSC tutorials later this year (worth $190) 9am & 9pm HSC Tips Students can learn techniques for effective study for the below subjects through our HSC Info Sessions. • HSC Tips for English Paper 1, 9.30am • HSC Tips for Mathematics (2 Unit), 11.30am & 12pm New Communication degrees In addition to close to 100 Info Sessions on the day, Open Day will also be a chance for students to hear about the new communication courses on offer in 2014. Students can talk to admissions staff about their application and attend admissions and scholarships info sessions. We’ll also have TAFE representatives on campus, as well as our Equity & Diversity Unit – who can assist students looking for pathways to UTS. UTS:INSEARCH will also attend to provide info on pathways.

Jones Street Fair & Live Entertainment

UTS Union, the social hub of UTS, will be running sports and clubs demos for the day

including UTS Debating Society live debate, and performance by the UTS Quiddich

Club. The Main Stage is back again, with bands, DJs and student club performances.
