Quotation Marks

Speech marks

• The primary function of quotation marks is to set off and represent exact language .

• We most often use them when working with outside sources, successful use of quotation marks is a practical defense against accidental plagiarism and an excellent practice in academic honesty.

1St : Double quotations for quotation and single quotations for words inside.

Example :She said, "Hurry up."

She said, “He said, ‘Hurry up.’”

2nd Three dots…

Call as EllipsisExample :

"I stopped believing in Santa Claus when…he asked for my autograph."

3rd Use quotation marks to set off a direct

quotation only

Wrong example : Thomas Edison declared that "Genius was one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration."

Thomas Edison declared that genius was one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.

First, drop the quotes:

Second, rewrite the sentence

According to Thomas Edison, "Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration."

Third, move the quotes so that they enclose only Edison's exact words:

Thomas Edison declared that genius was "one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration".

comma

colon

Do not use quotation marks with quoted material that is more than three lines in length.
