SanDiego,CAThePacificSouthwestJudoAssociation,PSJA,welcomedMs.EikoShepherd,7thDan,USJFKataDevelopmentandCertificationChairpersontoSanDiegofortheannualPSJAsponsoredKataclinicsthatwereheldNovember19th,20thand21st,2010.ItisalwaysapleasureandagreatopportunitytoattendclinicsgivenbyShepherdSensei,whoisastudentoftheKodokanandalsoMs.KeikoFukuda,9thDan,oneofDr.Kano’soriginalstudents.TheseriesofthreeKataclinicswerescheduledbyEvaMcCatty,PSJAKataChair,assistedbyBruceKnight,PSJAVPofDevelopment.TheclinicsofferedthisyearwereKodokanGoshinJutsu,Nage‐no‐kataandKime‐no‐kata.TwelveJudoDojosparticipated.Therewere61judokawhocamefromalloverSanDiegoandsometraveledfromLosAngelestoattend.Inadditiontherewerenumerousspectators.ThefirstKataclinichadSenseiShepherdleading17judokainKodokanGoshinJutsu,SelfDefenseTechniques.GoshinJutsuwasdevelopedin1956todefendagainstdangerfromothers.Participantslearnedtodefendagainstunarmedattackssuchasbeingheldorpreventingstrikingfromadistanceanddefendingagainstarmedattacksfromsomeoneusingaknife,stickoragun.Afterwardaveryinformativeclinic,SanShiDojosponsoredawonderfuldinnerandclubmembers,Mrs.MatsubaraandBillCaldwell,madedeliciouscurryforeveryonetoshare.

The2ndKataclinicwasNage‐No‐Kata,FormsofThrowing.Theturnoutwasexcellenttherewere45participantsandHeiseiDojohadwalltowalljudoka.

OnSundayShepherdSenseipresentedthefinerpointsofheralwaysexcellentinstructioninKime‐No‐Kata,FormsofDecisiveActionorcombat.ShepherdSenseiillustratedthefundamentalsofattackanddefenseintwogroups,IdoriorkneelingandTachiaiorstandingtechniques.Thetwentytechniquesincluded

striking,knifeandswordattackstovitalpointsonthebody.Expertknowledgeofthesetechniquescanbeveryusefulinreallifeanddeathsituations.TherewasagoodturnoutforKime‐no‐kata;thelastintheseriesofPSJAsponsoredKataclinics.Therewere17participantswhorepresentedmanyPSJAandsomeNANKAclubs.
