“FABRICATION OF THERMAL STORAGE WALL OR THROMBE WALL”
Basic Diagram of thermal storage wall
What is thermal storage wall?
A thermal storage wall is defined as a south-facing wall that is glazed on the outside. Solar heat strikes the glazing and is absorbed into the wall, which conducts the heat into the room over time. The walls are at least 8 inches thick. Generally, the thicker the wall, the less the indoor temperature fluctuates.
WORKING OF thermal storage wall
A typical Thermal storage wall can form part of the building envelope and may incorporate thermal mass principles. It consists of a 20–40 cm thick masonry wall coated with a dark, heat-absorbing material. A single or double layer of glass is placed on the outer face away from the wall, with a small airspace between the wall and the glass During the day solar radiation will heat the air trapped between the glass and the wall, and the wall itself will also heat up. Vents at the top and the base of the wall allow the heated air to be circulated naturally into the building.
Once the wall heats up it too will radiate heat into the building. During the night heat that is stored in the thermal mass of the wall will radiate into the room. At night it is advisable to close the upper vent to prevent the loss of heat energy from the building.
These walls save energy by
complementing conventional heating. In an efficient building Trombe walls may even replace the need for conventional heating.
FABRICATING COMPONENTS
PLYWOOD THERMOCOL GLASS PANE BLACK FINS ALUMINIUM FOIL EXHAUST FAN G P SHEET
FABRICATION PROCEDURE
First of all we will make a rectangular box using plywood of dimension 2feet sqr where inside the box we will stick the thermocol for storage of heat.
On the front side we will make two holes one on the up and other on the down i.e. upper vent and lower vent.
We will fix the fan on the upper vent.
Now we will extend our construction by sticking the aluminum foil on the front side AL foil acts as high reflecting source of sunlight.
Black fins are fixed on above the aluminum foil, purpose of black vents is to trap the heat of the sun.
Lastly we will fix a glass.

SCOPE
The solar heater can be effective for the people residing in colder areas.
The total cost involved in the development of solar room heater is approx Rs.3400.This is cost effective and can be used for the poor people.
This technique is already been used in the countries like USA, Nepal, Canada and many other countries.
Advantages: Thermal storage walls can be used in mild to severe
climates. They can be used to passively cool homes. They greatly reduce sun drenching, thereby lessening
glare and damage to carpets, upholstery, and plants, which can be quite significant in direct gain designs.
They work best when nighttimes heating is the primary goal.
By installing vents and windows for direct gain they can be modified to contribute to day time heat demand as well.
They provide mass in a relatively concentrated area, taking up a minimal amount of living space and provide great comfort.
Thermal storage walls are aesthetically appealing, externally and internally.
Disadvantages: Thermal storage walls may add to the cost
of construction, mainly by increasing the size of the foundation required to support the additional mass.
They may reduce daylight and access to views.
Heat loss can be quite significant at night unless the external surface of the structure is insulated.
It cannot be used through out the year.
COST ESTIMATED(APRX)
Glass 500
Plywood 1100
Thermal storage medium(thermocol)
100
Black Fins 450
Fan 60
Other essentials 1200
Total 3410
CONCLUSION
Today, solar heating is becoming more important than ever before because it is an non conventional source as natural gas sources such as coal, lignite all these fuels are becoming more expensive as they are at a edge of shrink.
Our natural fossil fuels would last longer if we used this type of non conventional sources.
Solar heating do not cause any pollution,so our environment would be cleaner.
