THERMALDRY INSULATED WALL – FLOOR MEMBRANE SYSTEM

For best results these membranes should be used in conjunction with an under floor channeling system and a sump and pump system with a perforated sump liner which negates the need for ‘dimples ‘ as the water is eliminated from below the basement floor.

The purpose behind the design of this revolutionary membrane is to avoid the condensation issue that can plague the ‘all plastic’ type.

With its roots in this Space Age Technology, ThermalDry Membrane is manufactured by Astro-foil International to Basement Systems’ own UK patented design.

The membrane is butt jointed and the joints over sealed with a self adhesive Aluminium jointing tape is used to seal the joints.

There are two types of membrane: -

Wall membrane (ThermalDry W)

And Wall Floor membrane (ThermalDry WF)

Thermal Dry W consists of a scrim reinforced layer of 99% pure Aluminium foil laminated one side with a open dimpled pattern of air filled bubbles and a clear strong protective layer of clear vinyl on the other. The reflective foil returns 97% of radiant heat, that would otherwise be lost and the closed cell bubble vinyl provides a break against conducted heat loss.

It comes with a variety of finings suitable for different methods of fixing the plasterboard -dab and bond metal stud and timber batten

This graph indicates how ThermalDry Wall membrane enhance heat retention when used on brick walls with a layer of plasterboard and air spaces. In this typical example the surface of the membrane (the vapour barrier) is some 7.5 degrees Celsius higher as a result of the insulating properties, substantially reducing the risk of condensation as compared with un-insulated membranes.

Q. Couldn’t I just use and ordinary plastic membrane with insulation in front of it?

A. No. In fact insulating IN FRONT of a vapour barrier actually increases the risk of condensation on that vapour barrier as the insulation works to keep heat from the room away from the membrane.

THE THERMALDRY MEMBRANE SYSTEM HAS BEEN FEATURED ON ‘ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT’ TWICE AS WELL AS SKY DISCOVERY CHANNEL.

Page 6: Thermal Dry Wall Floor membrane

ThermalDry WF consists of a layer of high compression closed cell polythene bubbles laminated between two layers of 99% pure Aluminium foil, each protected by a clear layer of vinyl. It may be used in both floor and wall applications. It is strong enough to take a 300mm concrete slab laid over it, and is also suitable as an underlay for laminate flooring., chipboard or concrete screed.

ThermalDry Wall and Floor membrane basically acts like a big mirror, reflecting heat back into your house keeping the basement and even the rooms above warm!

Of greatest importance is the fact that it keeps itself warm, thus avoiding condensation on the membrane itself – a problem that can affect non-insulated membranes.

If required, higher levels of insulation (lower U Value) may be obtained by using ThermalDry in conjunction with a bulk insulator.
