PBIS-Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Behavior is like academics, it has to be taught:

•Show how it’s done in detail•Watch them do it•Give positive response/reward

PreventionVs.

Punishment

If a child is taught the behavior that is expected, there is a much greater chance that inappropriate behavior can be prevented and that punishment can be avoided.

PBIS- Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Schools teach PBIS by:• Showing students the behavior they expect. Example: Appropriate bus riding behavior:

Teachers model getting on the bus, off the bus, sitting with hands and feet out of the aisle and to themselves, no yelling.

• Having students show their understanding of the behavior by repeating it:Example: Have students repeat steps shown by doing what they saw being modeled.

• Reinforcing positive behavior:Give positive feedback and reward appropriate behavior.

How can you use PBIS at home?

• Teach your children the behavior you expect and model the behavior.• Have your child repeat what you

have shown them.• Give positive reinforcement

PBIS at Home………..Example: Model: When you finish eating dinner bring your

plate to the sink, rinse it off, put it in the dishwasher.

Have child repeat: Following steps that you showed.

Reinforce: “That was great!”, if you do that tomorrow night you can have an extra 30 minutes of _________. (Rewards do not have to be costly. Verbal praise is also important, be specific).
