The Safe and Civil Schools Survey is
open until November 1. Our school is
committed to providing a safe and
encouraging place for your child. You
can help us continue to make
improvements to our school by
completing a short online survey. We
want to know what you think, too. All
responses are anonymous. The resulting
data will allow us to see if the three
groups—parents/guardians, students,
and staff—agree or disagree about
important issues. We will be able to
identify what we are doing well and what
we need to work on, such as safety in a
particular location of the school,
students’ understanding of the
expectations for behavior, or
communication with families. It’s quick
and easy, just visit http://bit.ly/
rmssafeandcivil2019. Use the assigned
ID: PARENT_RMS and passcode:
Q2G3P3S2 Just one parent or
guardian from each household should
take it.
Have questions about homework? The
Homework Hotline is here to help!
Students at all grade levels who have
questions about their assignments, as
well as parents and guardians who
need support while helping their child
at home, can call or email the
Homework Hotline. The Homework
Hotline is open Monday through
Thursday from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. Call
for help: 973-4411. Please take
advantage of this support system to
make Every Student Future Ready!
ZAP on Tuesday and Thursday is not

Volunteers Needed
Have you heard of Volunteer Kansas? It’s a website
(www.volunteerkansas.org) for people who want to find
exciting and useful ways to engage in their community.
Students can browse opportunities to volunteer by loca-
tion or by their interests.
United Way has a website that lists
volunteer opportunities for teens. For
more information, visit http://
www.unitedwayplains.org/teen-
volunteers/ .
Turn in hours to
your CHARGE
Teacher. Check
google classroom
for the number of
hours you have
turned in.
Pumpkins at the Park
Tanganyika puts on a family-friendly Halloween event, Pumpkins at the Park. Pumpkins at the Park is
by far the largest special event we put on each year. In fact, we need approximately 100 volunteers per
night for the event to work. All of the funds raised by this event go straight into our Winter Fund to help
feed the rare and endangered animals in our care over the winter! Dates Available: Friday 10/18,
Saturday 10/19, Sunday 10/20, Friday 10/25, Saturday 10/26, and Sunday 10/27. Age
Requirements: Volunteers must be 14 to attend without a parent/guardian. Volunteers 11 to 13 may
attend with a parent or guardian age 18 or older. Volunteers under 14 may be limited in what positions
they can fill. Times: 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm (must attend for the full shift). To sign up, visit
twpark.hauntscheduler.com
Have a picture of you volunteering?
Send it to Denise Van Horn to include in our PIB Presentations

This week we will review and test over the Percent
Topic that we started before the break. Our next
unit is Unit Rates and Conversions. We learned
one way to convert in Science already, so this will
be an interesting comparative study of many
methods. Don’t forget MATHIA this week.
We begin our unit on space at this point in the
year. Our first topic of study is the relationship be-
tween the earth, sun, and moon, as well as the other
planets in our solar system. I won’t have any pages to
check this week since they were all graded before the
break. We will start a new bell work strategy this
week so you can look forward to grades next
week. Thank you for all the great supplies and ideas
on our fabulous marble challenge! They students had
a lot of fun and learned a lot about Newton’s Laws.

We will be returning to our Pearson book for the
next several weeks. Our new unit is about Animal
Allies. We will begin with our Launch text Animal
Buddies and begin the text of Hachiko: The Story
of a Loyal Dog. We will be reviewing words with
the suffix “able” and learning the proper usage of
parentheses, commas and dashes.
The Egyptian Spy paper is due Monday night at
9:00 for Hours 2 and 3. Next week we will begin
our study of the Israelites.
Students are enjoying our new big idea of “People
and Animals.” Last week we read the short story
“Lob’s Girl,” by Joan Aiken, and this week started
Sterling North’s classic novel, Rascal. We continue
to work on grammar and writing skills with an em-
phasis on strong verbs. Next week our Wordly
Wise homework and quiz will be on Lesson 5. 25
Books Campaign deadline is Friday October 19!
Reading the first chapters of Felipe y María has
caused the confidence level of 6th graders to sky-
rocket in their ability to understand written Span-
ish. Next week they will read chapters four
through six and do a variety of activities to aid in
their comprehension.
Students are having a blast reviewing all of our old
vocabulary and laughing at the ridiculous charac-
ters. We will be reading the next two episodes
next week and doing fun activities and acting to
improve our comprehension.
Percentages are another format for expressing a
ratio. Students have been identifying equivalent
percents, fractions, and decimals. We will contin-
ue to emphasize the importance of reducing frac-
tions to lowest term, a 6th grade standard. Math

We will finish working on Module 4 Topic 1: Introduction to Probability and begin Topic 2: Compound
Probability. We will take a test over Topic 1 and 2. They will have time each week in class, but some
time at home or during ZAP may be needed to complete this goal, 50% is due by Monday, December 16.
If you need additional help, ZAP is available on Tuesday and Thursday at lunch in my classroom. Mathia
percentage complete is available at: http://bit.ly/217mathia2019.
Students have been wrapping up our science fic-
tion unit and are working on an essay defending
an author’s definition of science fiction. They will
present and discuss these next week.
The seventh graders will continue the science fic-
tion as social commentary unit this coming week,
working with Bradbury’s “The Veldt”.
7th Grade Math 7+: Math students have started the Com-
pound Probability unit, and we’ll continue this topic through
next week (with a Mathia day on Tuesday). Remember, the
next 25% of Mathia is due in December.
7th Grade Algebra: Math students have recently completed
the topic on Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities, and
next week we’ll move on to Systems of Equations. This is a
fun problem solving unit, and we’ll add some enrichment by
tackling real world entrepreneurship problems! There will be
a Mathia day on Wednesday.
We will finish North America this week with a test
on Friday. Study guides will be available on
google classroom next week.

Seventh Grade PIB
Next week students will read chapters four and
five of the novel Patricia va a California. There will
be a variety of activities throughout the week to
aid in comprehension.
Scientists in seventh grade will be modeling
earth’s processes next week.

After finishing the book Casi se muere, we will
begin learning vocabulary for Chapter 5A next
week, which covers "families, parties and celebra-
tions". The flashcards for that chapter are due on
Tuesday, October 22nd and the vocabulary recog-
nition quiz is on Tuesday the 29th.
Scientists in eighth grade will be designing, as-
sembling, testing, redesigning and reassembling
a cold pack to provide first aid for a sports injury.

This coming week, the eighth graders will continue
our study of suspense fiction with “The Raven” by
E.A. Poe and “The Hitchhiker” by Lucille Fletch-
er. We’ll concentrate on how the author develops
characterization and plot through suspense.
Math students have recently completed the topic
on Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities, and
next week we’ll move on to Systems of Equa-
tions. This is a fun problem solving unit, and we’ll
add some enrichment by tackling real world en-
trepreneurship problems! There will be a Mathia
day on Wednesday.
We got a bit sidetracked this week. Rather than
moving on in our Stories of Suspense unit, we
went back to our oral storytelling unit and worked
on turning those stories into full, written personal
narratives. We will be going forward with our Sto-
ries of Suspense unit next week.
Students will be creating a plot diagram of the
Revolutionary War this week and we will finish the
Revolutionary War with a test on Friday.
Given a variety of triangles, students have been
constructing points of concurrency: orthocenters,
centroids, circumcenters, and incenters. It’s been
interesting how challenging this process has been,
being that these constructions are so similar.
Math Practices: Model Mathematics
We will continue working on Module 2 Topic 2:
Solving Linear Equations. They will have time
each week in class, but some time at home or
during ZAP may be needed to complete this goal,
50% is due by Monday, December 16. If you
need additional help, ZAP is available on Tuesday
and Thursday at lunch in my classroom. Mathia
percentage complete is available at:
