Volunteers Needed

Have you heard of Volunteer Kansas? It’s a website

(www.volunteerkansas.org) for people who want to find

exciting and useful ways to engage in their community.

Students can browse opportunities to volunteer by loca-

tion or by their interests.

United Way has a website that lists

volunteer opportunities for teens. For

more information, visit http://

www.unitedwayplains.org/teen-

volunteers/ .

Have a picture of you volunteering?

Send it to Denise Van Horn to include in our PIB Presentations and Newsletters.

Our focus this week is on reviewing the rational

number system for a test on Thursday. Students

need to review the material on Mathia so that they

can be at about 70% by the end of Janu-

ary. Thank you for your support.

This week we will wrap up the introductory study

of the atom on Tuesday with a short test on which

they will not use notes. It will focus on the parts

of the atom and charges of each as well as posi-

tions in the atom. To prepare they need to be

able to look at a box on the periodic table and

find the number of each particle as well as under-

standing the ideas in the last sentence. I will

check pages 32-33 this week, so they need their

We will be preparing for our PBA (Performance

Based Assessment) next week. We will read one

more short story and then students will write a

persuasive essay on technology. They will be citing

information from the three selections in the text

and from the novel Z for Zachariah.

Using the Student Referenced Grading rubric we

will be completing our first assessment over Spar-

ta and Athens. This will cover information from

our textbook, centers, class discussion and re-

search. This will be written in class only and

should reflect what has been learned over the

past two weeks.

Students are doing a good job on their websites featur-

ing their oldest living relatives. We will spend two days

per week on this project until the end of February, but

students will still need to be working at home to be

sure that their project is of the highest quality. Stu-

dents did a great job demonstrating their mastery of

the elements of plot as they completed oversized plot

charts for Armstrong Perry’s exciting short story “The

Ghost of the Lagoon.” Next week we will be working on

Wordly Wise Lesson 11.

Next week's focus will be on grammar, specifically

on adjectives, definite/indefinite articles and

word order. The quizzes over all three grammar

points will be on Wednesday, January 29th. Stu-

dents can go online to www.phschool.com to

practice for the quizzes. The web codes that they

will need to access the practice activities are jcd-

0113, jcd-0114 and jcd-0115.

Students have been working on vocabulary mas-

tery, and next week we will hone our grammar by

looking at word order and subject/adjective agree-

ment. There is no quiz this week. Keep an eye out

for info on our novel study that we begin February

10th.

In this module, students learn the properties of similar

figures, dilating figures, and recognizing when figures

are similar or distorted. From similarity, students in-

vestigate the proportionality of side lengths of right

triangles and discover the sine, cosine, and tangent

ratios along with the related cosecant, secant, and

cotangent ratios. They use these ratios to solve prob-

lems for unknown side lengths and angles. Math Prac-

their second component of their research project.

poetry unit, including our annual Poetry Café per-

formances.

and Radical Equations next week. Watch for a

test toward the end of the week!

Students were assigned a partner and an Eastern

Asian country today for which they will create a

“TedTalk”. They will have time in class Tuesday-

Thursday to not only gather their information, cre-

ate a slide show, but also to practice their presen-

tation. Presentations will begin on Friday next

week. The map quiz will be on Wednesday, Jan.

22. They have created a map to use as a study

guide.

form Chapter 8. This serves as their assessment

for Chapter 8 and is due on Tuesday. We will

begin Chapter 9 next week.

In this module, students extend their understand-

ing of numbers and the number line to include

negative numbers. They will use a number line to

represent, make sense of, and order negative

numbers. Students will build on your knowledge of

the coordinate plane to construct a four-quadrant

graph. Throughout the module, students will ana-

lyze and solve a variety of real-world problems.

Math Practices: Model with Mathematics

We will be finish working on Module 2 Topic 4.
