Highlights: Sparta • King Leonidas • Olive Culture • Gythio seaside village
Sparta is located on the south eastern side of Peloponnese, 250 km from Athens, modern Sparti
or Sparta is a small town with famous history. In Greek mythology the founder of the city was
Lacedaemon, a son of Zeus, who gave his name to the region and his wife’s name to the city. Sparta was
also an important member of the Greek force which participated in the Trojan War. Indeed, the Spartan
king Menelaos instigated the war after the Trojan prince Paris abducted his wife Helen. The word
“spartan” means self-restrained, frugal and austere. Leonidas (c. 530-480 B.C.) was a king of the city-
state of Sparta from about 490 B.C. until his death at the Battle of Thermopylae against the Persian army
in 480 B.C. Although Leonidas lost the battle, his death was seen as a heroic sacrifice because he sent
most of his army away when he realized that the Persians had outmaneuvered him. Three hundred of his
fellow Spartans stayed with him to fight and die.
Do not miss:
Τhe Archaeological Museum: its exhibits cover a tremendously long period (Neolithic to Roman age).
