COLORUL FIREWORKSSaturday evening my

granddaughter andWalter Crouse went tothe fireworks event inNorton. The fireworkswere beautiful. It waseasy to find a good parking spot near theMethodist Church on a little incline.Quite a few people were there with chil-dren and of course others to enjoy thepretty display of chemicals blasting intowhat looked like huge flowers. Therewas one Smiley Face, a dog shape in oneand a heart in another. The others werethe usual display of colorful blasts.

Just for your information, for thosewho do not know and maybe do not care, all those colors represent various chem-icals: white – magnesium, red – lithiumsalts, yellow – sodium, blue – copper, purple – strontium copper, silver –burned aluminum, titanium or magne-sium, orange – calcium chloride, green –barium. So when you see these fire-works, remember, as some of thechemists say, “Chemistry is every-thing!”

CONDOLENCESWe offer our condolences to the fam-

ily of Johnny Stapleton who passed awaylast week after a long battle with cancer.Even though he had cancer for a longtime, I would see him here and there andhe appeared to be healthy and alwaysrather upbeat considering what he wasdealing with.

Johnny grew up here in TheHurricane and his family of 14 siblings

and parents lived just upthe road from us. I recallthat they had 11 boys andthree girls. Their dadworked in the coal minesand guess what the momdid. You are right: havingbabies and work, work, work. We all just lovedthose folks. They were

always so helpful to others, doing any lit-tle odd job that was needed.

Johnny was funny and had a joke totell just about every time I saw him. Hewas a talented man in that he could domechanic work and carpentry. He builthis own home. He canned a lot of food, raised a garden and three children alongwith his lovely wife Sharon, who was anoriginal Duncan Gap gal. We will allmiss our neighbor and friend.

WELCOME BACKJean and Jerry Mullins, our former

pastor, and wife at Hurricane BaptistChurch returned Sunday to fill in whilePastor Turner was away. There was agood crowd and the folks there were sohappy to see the sweet couple and theirdaughter Jennie and granddaughterBailey. Jerry was the pastor for severalyears, but due to health problems he andhis wife decided to retire about twoyears ago.

Jerry’s wife Jean was related closelyto Ralph Stanley and had attendedRalph’s private funeral last week andhear a few of the famous folks who cameto sing at the funeral. They did notattend the larger memorial service.

We miss Jerry and Jean and family, and pray that God will continue to blessand protect them as they go through life.
