Principles of

pressure vessels

Definition as related to Standard:

EN 13445: A pressure vessel is a closed container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure.And other standards such as ASME section VIII and etc.The PVElite software can design pressure vessels base on ASME , PD5500 , EN13445.

Shape of the pressure vessels.That is divided in two major groups:• Cylindrical pressure vessel.• Spherical pressure vessel.

Cylindrical Spherical

Formation components of pressure vessel:• Shell• Saddle• Lifting lug• Leg lug• Skirt• …

The information of the pressure vessel that designed by process engineering group classify in Design Data Sheet(DDS).

Basic part of the pressure

vessels.

Shell:That is the basic part of the pressure vessels and mainly manufactured by rolling of the flat sheets.

Head section:

Various type of the head section:

Flange:

Nozzles:Are used for leading the follow in or out , install equipment , ventilation and etc.

Various type of the nozzle:

Set-through Set-in

Set-on

Various type of the support:

Saddle that are used for horizontal pressure vessel.

Skirt that are used for vertical pressure vessel.

Lug support

Leg support

The information

that we should know!

Pressure:

• Absolute pressure

• Gauge pressure

• Atmospheric pressure(101325 Mpa)

• Operation pressure

• Design pressure

• Maximum allowable working pressure

• Maximum allowable pressure , new and cold

• Hydrostatic test pressure

Temperature:

• Operation temperature

• Design temperature(UG-20)

• Minimum design metal temperature

Loading:• Loading that caused from internal and external pressure• The weight of vessel and contents• The weight pump , duct , pipe and etc• Loading that caused from earth quake , wind and etc• …

Allowable tensile stress:ASME Appendix 1 sectionII part D

Allowable compressive stress:ASME Appendix 1 sectionII part D

Some calculations

(just for shell of the pressure vessel)

Hoop stress(P≠ 0.385SE , t≥0.5R ):

P=internal pressure(psi)

S=maximum allowable stress(psi) sectionII , part D

R=internal radius(in)

t=minimum require thickness of shell(in)

E=joint efficiency UW-12

Longitudinal stress(P≤1.25SE , R≤0.5t ):

Spherical shells(t≤0.365R , P≤0.665SE ):

corrosion situation:Rnew = Rold + corrosion allowance.

Post Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT) and Preheat:Are needed when the thickness are more than 1 inch.

Radiographic(base on table UW-12 for P.No and Group No):

Otherwise , spot radiography is adequate!
