Middle School Outdoor Education Program

Based upon the belief that skills developed and practiced in the outdoors transfer back to everyday life.

Students who participate in outdoor education programs deal directly with concepts such as:•Leadership and Followership

•Inclusiveness

•The value of working toward a common goal

•Recognition of the unique attributes of each individual

Benefits of Outdoor Education

Students who participate in outdoor education learn•About their own strengths and weaknesses•How persistence can bring success •That risk can be dealt with responsibly and thoughtfully

Personal experience in outdoor settings helps students•Develop a respect for the natural world•Recognize the value of the natural world

Fact Sheet

• AstroCamp (5th & 6th Grades) is located in the San Jacinto Mountains

• Mountain Astro Physics Science Camp (7th & 8th) is located in the San Bernadino Mountains

• 10:1 student to teacher ratio, plus camp instructors• Participants sleep in cabins and eat in a cafeteria• Transportation is provided to and from HIS via bus

• Students participate in a variety of educational and teambuilding activities

• Participation is required as part of the MS curriculum and educational program

Outdoor Ed Packets

• Specific to each trip - get the right packet

• Contain general guidelines, dining hall info, camp specific information, contact information, packing list, and medical forms

• All medical forms and waivers must be completed and turned in to the student’s CPR teacher no later than Sep 13

Communication While at Camp

• You will receive an email confirming our arrival to camp, an email with news from day 2, and an email confirming our departure from camp

• In the event of an emergency, please call the main school number 702-818-2100

• Contact home can often aggravate potential homesickness, but students are allowed to call home in the evenings – a phone is provided for that purpose, remember students should not bring cell phones.
