tempera paint, or permanent, fast-drying paint made of colored pigments and a
water-soluble binding base. Just like Leonardo, your little ones will love creating
their own paint with this unique art activity!

• Tempera is one of the oldest painting methods. Tempera
paintings dating back to the Roman Empire are still
displayed in museums around the world today.
• Tempera paint can be made with almost any base (berries,
stones or soil) to make pigment for different colors.

• Since your little ones are using an egg yolk base, paint
colors may look different than expected. For even more
fun, have your kids experiment with a variety of food

• Tempera painting is one of the oldest and longest lasting methods of painting. You can still find tempera paintings dating back to the 1st centuries AD (over 2000 years ago!) in museums around the world today.
• This method was popular for Renaissance artists. Before oil painting was introduced, Leonardo da Vinci made his own tempera paint to create beautiful works of art.
• Tempera paint can use almost anything for its color: ground up stones, berries, and even dirt!

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Separate the egg yolks and whites, then drop
one yolk into each bowl. Place the egg whites
and shells in the third bowl for easy clean up.
2. Using your fork, mix food coloring into the
egg until you can’t see the yolk anymore.
3. Be creative! Use your tempera paint to make
your newest masterpiece. Time how long your
paint takes to dry. Does it look different than
paints you’ve used before?
