• Tempera is a permanent, fast-drying paint made of colored pigments and a water-soluble binding base.

• Tempera painting is one of the oldest and longest lasting methods of painting. You can still find tempera paintings dating back to the 1st centuries AD (over 2000 years ago!) in museums around the world today.

• This method was popular for Renaissance artists. Before oil painting was introduced, Leonardo da Vinci made his own tempera paint to create beautiful works of art.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Separate the egg yolks and whites, then drop

one yolk into each bowl. Place the egg whites

and shells in the third bowl for easy clean up.

2. Using your fork, mix food coloring into the

egg until you can’t see the yolk anymore.

3. Be creative! Use your tempera paint to make

your newest masterpiece. Time how long your

paint takes to dry. Does it look different than

paints you’ve used before?

Congratulations!You’ve made your

own paint, just like

Leonardo da Vinci!

Rider Hint:For even more fun, try using glue

or honey as different binding

mediums, or materials used to

make the paint stick together.
