New Zealand is located in Oceania, in the South Pacific Ocean.

Probably Queenstown's most famous thrill-seeking activity is bungy jumping (also known as bungee jumping), where a long elastic cord is attached to the ankles or harness, and the person jumps off a large height. New Zealand was brought to the forefront of adventure sport when in 1888 AJ Hackett opened the first commercial bungy jump from the Kawarau Bridge, 43 metres (141 feet), over the Kawarau river.

Bungy jumping was inspired by David Attenborough's 1950's footage of the land divers of Pentecost Island Vanuatu, who tied vines to their ankles and jumped off tall platforms as a religious ceremony to bring a good harvest.

The Kawarau Bridge, 43m above the river, and a Category I historic place, is the site of the world's first commercial bungy jumping operation.

Kawarau River drains Lake Wakatipu, in northwestern Otago, New Zealand. In the 19th century, gold was extracted from the river. Tourist adventure activities on the river include riverboarding, jet boating, white water rafting, river surfing, and bungy jumping.

The export of sheep and dairy products has brought New Zealand billions of dollars and continues to do so. Two or three generations ago the majority of New Zealand farms would have been stocked with most of the animals featured in this booklet - horses, pigs, fowls, ducks and turkeys.

Advances in technology and transport and a higher standard of living have today led to more specialized farming practices without the varied range of animals of previous decades.

Deer and goat farms are a relatively new phenomenon. Deer are farmed for their meat - a big export earner while goats have also become an important economic sideline for many farmers in the move to diversify.
