Pure O2 Technologies in Water Treatment
O2 use in biological waste water treatment
O2 for ozone production
• COD, surfactants, color removal
• Improvement on BOD/COD ratio
• Disinfection, micro-pollutants
Sludge treatment / minimization
• Ozonolysis
• Aerobic digestion
O2 for bioremediation of contaminate sites
O2 enhanced thermal treatment (incineration)

Oxygen transfer
In order to perform the biological process of organics absorption, the biomass needs
OXYGEN to breath
Biomass can adsorb O2 only if it’s dissolved in water, not from gas bubbles.
AIR
It is necessary to transfer O2 inside the biological treatment basin
Pure O2
O2
D.O.
Also microorganisms needs to
breath
National Seminar "Wastewater Treatment”
Starosel – September 29th, 2016 8
Why air has low O2 efficiency transfer?
Low concentration of O2 in AIR (21%)
Short permanence time of the air bubbles in water
O2 stripping effect due to the presence of large amount of N2
This lead to a poor efficiency of O2 mass transfer
only 10 ÷ 20% of O2 is dissolved in field conditions
Reduce the possibility to obtain high concentration of dissolved O2
typically no more than to 2 mg/l (ppm)
A low D.O. level prevents the sludge floc to be completed saturated
The floc is not completely active
the part of biomass not saturated with oxygen is “useless”

Benefits in pure Oxygen use
Increase plant treatment capacity
Easy adaption to load peaks
Low specific excess sludge production
Low electrical consumption
No aerosol and bad smells
Easy to adopt in existing basins
More than 500 units installed

LAB SCALE TESTS:
- Biological tests: Activated sludge, biofilm carriers
(MBBR), membrane (MBR) – respirometry
- Chemical or chemical / physical tests: pollutant
removal with ozone or AOP, phosphorous removal,
pH correction, activated carbon, etc.
GOAL
• Support service to customers
• Feasibility of the processes with indication of:
Inlet & outlet pollutant concentration
Pollutant removal performances
• Support to customers for plant operation
