Not Enough Cooks in the Kitchen

Jason de Runa, Julie Harpring, Miaoqi Zhu, and Moe RafiuddinI590 CSCW Final Project

We live in a fast food nation.

Different types of novices

• Throwing things together• Don’t know where to begin• Some skills, lack guidance and confidence

Many novices call others for help.

Issues with the Phone

• Difficult to show your helper what’s going on• Difficult for the helper to demonstrate

through gestures and show example tools• Video conferencing was not made for the

kitchen• What happens if the helper isn’t around to

help next time?

Research Methods: Three Video Observations

Insights

• Novices need lots of reassurance• Helpers use hand motions, gestures to

communicate key concepts• Knowledge of particular tools is variable• Novices often wanted to see demonstrations

more than once• Social chatter and celebration were important

parts of the experience

DesignAim: To support distributed collaborations between two remote kitchens. How? •Interface for video conference and recording.

Video and AudioRecording Ability

Design Evaluation

2 participants Paper prototypes

Objectives• Switching camera angles

intuitive• Finding past videos to tag and

view

Findings

• Interface is too demanding – too many camera angles for the video conference/recording interface

“If it takes this much time to figure out to cook, it would be easier just to call”

• Making it more clear how to bookmark sections of a video with tags

Future Directions

• Possible integration with Skype?• Voice recognition

Thanks!
