NFC: How it Works.• NFC=Near Field Communication

• Wireless technology- think RFID/ezpass- Radio-Frequesncy Identification using electromagnetic radio fields which operate on a smaller range with a different data rate.

• Data exchange, simple transactions and wireless connections between two devices in close “TAP” proximity of each other, generally 3a few centimeters

• Active/Passive: Three modes of operation.

Three modes of NFC:• Discovery: Read and Write.

One way connection: Reader (active) “gets” information from the (passive) chip/tag TAP point.

• Peer to Peer: Enables two way NFC connection and data exchange between TAP

points. One sends, then the other. Can share Bluetooth or WiFi link set up.

• Card Emulation: Mobile device acts as a smart card to interact with an NFC reader. Payments and Ticketing.

Why it works? Simple.• NFC connects, and connects, and connects. • It’s really that simple. Out of the box.• Eliminates language, physical and educational barriers.• Seamless. No apps to search for or download. • No services to sign up to. No pins or passwords to enter. • Chips and tags can be attached to most anything.• Instant gratification. Tap and connect. • Decisions, data, M2M connections are portable.• You are able to receive and share information: offline, online, in real time, on the go… where you are, when you need it.

Simple …

Central Point of Connection.

Growth Projections for NFC:• NFC applications expected to be a $35 billion industry by 2016.• Many of the top airlines plan to introduce NFC beginning this year.• Over 75% of POS terminals in the US are expected to be NFC enabled

by 2017.• The growth of the applications market is expected to be exponential with

the revenue growth from $7,686 million in 2011 to $34,515 million by 2016, at an estimated CAGR of 35% from 2011 to 2016. The most attractive of all the segments is the mobile payments segment; followed by the ticketing and access control.
