NER300 BEST Project – Bioethanol plant

• The Crescentino Plant is the first in the world to be designed and built to produce bioethanol from agricultural by-products or biomass not suitable for food consumption.

• This has been made possible thanks to PROESATM technology, developed in the Biochemtex R&D centers.

• The expertise developed in Crescentino will enable similar plants to be built in Europe, USA, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

• The project was supported by European Commission as part of its Seventh Framework Programme for research and development

BEST PROJECT – Second generation bioethanol process – demonstration scale of innovative and sustainable biotechnologic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into ethanol on a 51 million litres per year plant • Category RES (RENEWABLES) – BIOg (BIOENERGY –

Lignocellulose to ethanol)• Date of entry into operation: 01/06/2013 (5y

duration) • Legally Binding Instrument signed on April 2014 with

the Italian Minister of Environment • Project Sponsor: IBP SpA (main EPC contractor:

Biochemtex SpA) • NER300 contribution 28.4 millions Euro (for

renewable energy of 1.414.558 MWh related to ethanol production = 140.000 tons in five years

General comments

• NER300 can be a kind of incentive to mobilize investments, especially if timing (call, project selection and approval, …) is efficient

• In most cases does not solve the debt financing issue, but can help by improving the overall business plan: it does help new technologies to cover a gap of costs vs. more established technologies

• Clear/stable policy framework is today of most importance
