Located in the sumptuous “Admiralty House”, a former residence of the Commander in chief of the British Mediterranean Fleet, the museum hosts some of the most significant works by Mattia Preti, not to mention works by Turner, Guido Reni and Ribera and the best of Maltese artistic output from the 15th century to the present day. The building served originally as residence to successive knights of the Order of St John. It was later rebuilt during the 1760s by Fra Ramon de Sousa y Silva. During the early 19th century the palace was home to Louis-Charles of Orleans, Comte de Beaujolais during his brief stay on the island followed shortly by his demise
