Macmillan Secondary Teachers’ Day
BarcelonaDear Teachers,
Macmillan ELT is pleased to invite you to the Macmillan Secondary Teachers’ Day to be held at the Universitat de Barcelona on Saturday 4th May, 2013.
At the Macmillan Teachers’ Day our principal aim is to offer you practical training workshops that are designed to reflect current teaching contexts, enabling you to keep up-to-date with the latest innovations. You will take away with you sound activities and ideas that you can use directly in your classrooms.
The Macmillan team will be there to give you a warm welcome and will present our new materials.
This year attendance of the Macmillan Teachers’ Day will be officially certified by the Universitat de Barcelona.
Online Registration As attendance will be officially certified, the registration process has changed this year. In order to register to attend the Teachers’ Day, please enter the following website: http://www.ub.edu/ice/formacio/jornades/12-13/index-secondary.html.
The activities organized by ICE at the Universitat de Barcelona have the same status as the activities included in the Department for Education’s ongoing training plan. The certificates awarded for these courses will be incorporated into the training record of the teacher (XTEC) and can be used as accreditation for taking part in the different competitions or call for papers by the Department for Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya, according to the terms of each.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Macmillan Secondary Teachers’ Day
5 HOURS OffICIALLy CERTIfIED TRAINING
Speakers Speakers Sessions Sessions
Kieran DonaghyKieran Donaghy has taught in the UK, Italy, Portugal and Spain. He works
at UAB Idiomes Barcelona. He is particularly interested in the use of film, he
is the co-author of Films in Health Sciences Education and has an award-
winning blog on the use of film http://film-english.com/.
Steven MuirSteven has worked in ELT as a teacher, teacher trainer and materials writer
for over 20 years. He has taught English to young learners and adults in
Egypt, Hong Kong and Spain. He lives in Madrid and works at the British
Council in Alcalá de Henares.
Tom SpainTom has been teaching English for over 20 years and has spent the last
15 years at the British Council in Madrid designing and teaching courses
for learners of all levels. He is fascinated by the themes of motivation and
group dynamics and, because of this, likes to use a more personalised
methodology in the classroom. Tom enjoys finding and/or adapting
authentic materials for use with students and is a big fan of technology as
a useful tool for helping learners.
Simon wardSimon is a Senior Practitioner Educational Psychologist in England where
his specialism is positive behaviour and well-being. For a number of years,
Simon has been running a variety of projects to develop the attitudes, skills
and experiences which allow individuals and organisations to thrive and
lead to success and achievement. As a regular trainer, he has delivered
seminars on a range of topics including: motivation and learning, positive
behaviour management and solution oriented approaches.
Mª Jesús PáramoMª Jesús is an experienced teacher and teacher trainer. She is also the
co-author of several course books. She has run methodology courses for
CEPs in Madrid and has given numerous workshops at language teaching
conferences around the country.
Jade StevensAn experienced teacher and trainer, Jade has worked with students
of all ages and levels for The British Council in Europe, The Middle East,
and North Africa. He has delivered Cambridge Young Learner courses
(CELTYL) for the British Council and International House, and trained
Primary and Secondary teachers for the Xunta in Galicia. He currently
works as a Teacher Trainer for Macmillan ELT.
Tom waltonAn English teacher, technology trainer and Web designer, Tom has
lived and taught in Spain since 1979 and worked at International House
Barcelona since 1999. He believes technology should only be used in the
language classroom if it’s easy; doesn’t take up a lot of time; doesn’t get
in the way of language learning; and does actually lead to learning.
Plenary – Sala Paranimf
Simon ward Positive behaviour managementIn this highly interactive session, teachers will be encouraged to reflect on
their skills in managing behaviour in the classroom Areas to be covered
include: creating the climate, planning for good behaviour, teacher
response styles, re-direction techniques, the language of discipline and
challenging students. The session will explore practical, positive and
creative strategies for developing classroom management skills.
ROOM 1 – ESO
Mª Jesús Páramo The secret’s in the mix In this session, we look at how to identify mixed ability in the secondary
classroom and provide strategies for dealing with it efficiently and
effectively. We will take into consideration the setting of rules; the
organising of groupwork and co-operative learning and working with
different materials. We will also consider aspects of evaluation and self-
evaluation with mixed-ability groups. Some of this session will be illustrated
with video footage of students from 4º ESO.
Jade Stevens Together everyone achieves more!Language learning requires many forms of interaction in which
communication and collaboration with others is essential. By engaging in
collaborative learning, students not only get to interact with others on a
common task, but they also get to pool and capitalize on one another’s
knowledge and skills. Collaborative learning techniques can help us build
teams and contribute to a necessary positive learning environment in which
learners can thrive to become confident learners, language learners and
individuals. In this session, a range of collaborative learning techniques to
create a positive learning environment will be demonstrated.
ROOM 2 – Batxillerat
Kieran Donaghy Short and sweet: using short films to promote creativity and communication
In this hands-on workshop we’ll explore how short films can be used in the classroom. We’ll look at how we can use short films to promote creativity, and both oral and written communication by doing communicative activities based around a variety of short films. The session will be very practical and involve a lot of teacher participation. Teachers will come away with practical activities to use with their own students.
Tom Spain Creative homeworkI’ve been experimenting with homework tasks for some time now. The goal is to try and link the tasks to students’ interests and hobbies and in that way to actively encourage learner autonomy. We also have regular sharing and feedback in the classroom. There’ll be lots of ideas to try out!
ROOM 3 – EOIs & Private Language Schools
Steven Muir Telly learning In this practical workshop we will look at a range of classroom activities inspired by clips from film, TV and YouTube. These activities focus on a variety of language areas and skills, and can be adapted to use with many other clips. Most importantly, students seem to enjoy them!
Tom walton Technology makes writing better. Discuss. With a view to the sort of writing tasks learners have to do on exams like Selectivitat, FCE and CAE, in this session we’ll be looking what learners can do both in class and outside with tools such as Blogger, Edmodo and Google Docs, as well as an interactive whiteboard and mobile phones, to make writing first of all more collaborative and thus more communicative. If we do, writing becomes more fun and more motivating; and, hopefully as a result, better.
