Speakers SessionsSessions
Carol Read Developing intercultural competence with children
(Plenary)
Intercultural competence has been described as a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and awareness. But what does this mean in the context of working with Infant and Primary school children who learn English as part of their compulsory education? This session presents a model and rationale for integrating culture with different ages of children and explores a range of practical ideas that bring the notion of culture alive in the classroom
Carol Read Creativity and communication through story and drama
(6 to 8-year-olds)
This session shows how a well-managed, whole-child approach to storytelling and drama develops pupils’ potential for creativity and helps them to become confident communicators in English. We will use an integrated combination of multisensory techniques and digital resources to explore ways to engage children in relevant issues and to link learning English to authentic culture and real content. We will also explore the role of storytelling and drama in developing positive values in today’s world.
Joanne Ramsden Phonic Fun (3 to 8-year-olds)
Phonics is a highly effective method we can use to teach children to read and write, but it can become repetitive if we’re not careful. Integrating fun and games to the systematic approach can keep children motivated. This practical session aims to show a variety of fun phonics activities which are easy to use, increase childrens’ enjoyment and help maximise their learning in the classroom.
Joanne Ramsden Learning through literacy (8 to 12-year-olds)
Literacy texts can provide an excellent framework with which to develop reading and writing skills in the bilingual classroom. In this session we will look at positive strategies and practical ideas to motivate pupils through the use of real world texts.
Roisin O’Farrell Making it their own (8 to 12-year-olds)
Children are independent beings. They play on their own, invent their own stories and draw their own conclusions about the world around them. This autonomy should be promoted in the classroom. We will look at techniques to encourage children to work things out for themselves, activities that encourage independent practice of the language and tasks that allow children to experiment and consolidate their knowledge.
Jane Martin Promoting creativity in the art classroom
(8 to 12-year-olds)
The art classroom is the perfect place for pupils to explore the creative process and develop English language skills in a natural way. In this session we will focus on the skills, techniques and materials pupils need to flourish as young artists and share a variety of art lessons and projects that inspire creativity, imagination and self-expression.
Ana Demitroff A hands-on approach to the brain (8 to 12-year-olds)
This is a practical session on how to develop Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and creativity in your language or CLIL classroom. We will first get our heads around these concepts. Then we will look at pupil-teacher and pupil-pupil interaction and task design to get your pupils thinking and creating.
Jane MartinJane is the author of the new Arts & Crafts Primary course,
the first publication from the joint venture of Macmillan and
Edelvives, ByME. She received her Teaching Credential and
a Masters in Education at the University of California at Santa
Barbara. She has over 13 years of teaching experience, the
last eight of which have been in Madrid. She has also worked as a teacher
trainer, focusing on themes such as arts and crafts, CLIL in the Primary
classroom, cross-curricular connections and differentiation.
Ana DemitroffAfter her 25th year as a teacher and a certain birthday, Ana
has stopped counting. Nevertheless she still gets a buzz from
the classroom. She holds a Diploma and Masters, but feels she
learns most from colleagues and students. Her special interest
is in finding creative solutions to challenging conditions.
