The company’snamesake founderwasn’t thinkingnationally whenshe donned herfi rst signature shiftas a 20-somethingsociety wife inPalm Beach. Prac-ticality was moreimportant for thewoman who,encouraged to geta hobby, decidedto sell orangesfrom husbandPeter’s citrusgroves to her man-sion-dwellingfriends and neigh-bors. Lilly Putlizer wasa young, recentlymarried, sassysocialite who need-ed something tocamoufl age thefruit stainsinevitable at thatjuice stand, whichshe opened in1960 on Via Miznernear WorthAvenue. She founda colorful print andcharged her seam-stress with creatinga cool, stylish sil-houette. When Pulitzerstarted wearing herfi rst Classic Shiftdress — lined withlace seam bind-ing — friendsnoticed and want-ed their own.Juice-stand saleswent national whena photo of child-hood friend JackieKennedy wearing aClassic Shiftappeared in LifeMagazine. Throughout the1960s and ‘70s,Pulitzer’s companyfl ourished with anexpanding line ofapparel. Originalprints addedcharm. Pulitzer closedher business doorsin 1984. The com-pany started itssecond life in 1993,when she sold it.Now a companyconsultant and LillyPulitzer Rousseau,she still lives inPalm Beach.
