Those Lilly Pulitzer print dresses that have been part of fashion history for 50 years have taken us to luxury resorts, on cruises, to garden parties. To Palm Beach and to summer wedding recep- tions. They’re a touch of the life of the affluent, if only in our imaginations. And even if we did not own one. We still looked at them and thought about owning one. There is just something about those cheerful pink and green tropical, flowery, print dress- es. What other fabric/print has a cult following? Dress- T ing from head to toe in Lilly has been a tradition for gen- erations of Lilly lovers and now there is more — much more, as I discovered on my visit to the Kravet/Lee Jofa showroom in the Miromar Design Center in Estero. Lilly is coming to your home! Lilly Pulitzer for Lee Jofa has just launched a collec- tion of home furnishings fabrics and trimmings. The collection features many of the familiar prints in See LILLY D3 Home Inspirations WRENDA GOODWYN “There has been an incredible amount of excitement in the design community for months about this fun, new collection.” —Amy Jimenez, manager of the Kravet/Lee Jofa showroom in Estero The company’s namesake founder wasn’t thinking nationally when she donned her first signature shift as a 20-something society wife in Palm Beach. Prac- ticality was more important for the woman who, encouraged to get a hobby, decided to sell oranges from husband Peter’s citrus groves to her man- sion-dwelling friends and neigh- bors. Lilly Putlizer was a young, recently married, sassy socialite who need- ed something to camouflage the fruit stains inevitable at that juice stand, which she opened in 1960 on Via Mizner near Worth Avenue. She found a colorful print and charged her seam- stress with creating a cool, stylish sil- houette. When Pulitzer started wearing her first Classic Shift dress — lined with lace seam bind- ing — friends noticed and want- ed their own. Juice-stand sales went national when a photo of child- hood friend Jackie Kennedy wearing a Classic Shift appeared in Life Magazine. Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, Pulitzer’s company flourished with an expanding line of apparel. Original prints added charm. Pulitzer closed her business doors in 1984. The com- pany started its second life in 1993, when she sold it. Now a company consultant and Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau, she still lives in Palm Beach. LILLY when I spent some timepreviewing the collectionwith Amy Jimenez, manag-er of the Kravet/Lee Jofashowroom in Estero. “There has been anincredible amount ofexcitement in the designcommunity for monthsabout this fun, new collec-tion, which is exclusivelydistributed through LeeJofa.We are thrilled to have it on display,” says Jimenez. “The collection also fea-tures six white upholsteryweight fabrics, a light-weight raw silk available in15 colors and will soonhave beautiful trimmingsto accent with as well.
