Chapter 8: Distinguish Facts from Opinion

• A fact is something that is true about a subject and can be tested or verified. Clues:

" 70% of...., or "The students experienced..."

• An opinion is what someone thinks about a subject and it cannot be proven true or false.Clues:

"I believe...", “I think”, "It's clear...", or “The teachers should..."

Deciding if a sentence is a Fact

• The statement is a FACT if you can find proof, or evidence for it.

Types of Supporting Details

Facts are strong support:

Two broad methods of reasoning are deductive and inductive approaches.

Deductive reasoning :more general to the more specific.
