Appearance to the Seven by the Sea(John 21:1-14)

Simon Peter, Thomas (the Twin), Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples What are they together doing?

Peter -> I’m going to fish Others -> we’re going with you

They go about 200 cubits away from shore 100 yards, 300 feet or a football field

Peter can’t wait for the boat to make it to shoreI wonder if they thought about the first encounter

Appearance to the Seven by the Sea(John 21:1-14)

Come and eat Jesus shows that is His physical (not spiritual) body He eats and drinks His body has the physical scars

I am still a little confused that they need to ask Who are you? Is Jesus’ appearance different than it was before His

death, burial and resurrection? THEY ARE CONVINCED BY THE EVIDENCE OF

HIS WORK!This is the 3rd appearance to the apostles.

Peter, Do You Love Me?(John 21:15-20)

The Greek here has subtle shades of meaning which the English does not express

In the first two questions addressed to Peter (Joh 21:15,16) our Lord uses the strong verb agapan Peter replies by the weaker verb philein

In his third question, Jesus drops the agapan and takes Peter's own word--philein: As if he said, "Peter, are you even sure that you

have a high regard for me?"

Peter, Do You Love Me? (John 21:15-20)

Peter had professed the most unparalleled devotion for Jesus When the Lord now asks him if he has that devotion His response humbly describes his love with weaker

wordsJesus’ repeated question grieves Peter

Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.Jesus gives him an assignment

Tend/Feed My Sheep3 denials – 3 professions of loveHe still calls him Peter -- Rock -- Encouragement

Peter’s FateJohn 21:18-19

When you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands,

and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.

Jesus spoke this signifying by what death he would glorify God.

Ends with -> "Follow Me."

Peter Questions Jesus about John’s Fate(John 21:20-25)

On Peter’s mind is the fact that he had denied Christ He had forsook Christ He had said, if all forsake you I will stay with you. He has on his mind the manner of death he faces

Now he turns the attention to John saying What about him? What was Jesus’ response Note it is John that sets the record straight

John identifies himself as “apostle whom Jesus loved”

Peter, 500 brethren at once, James and Paul

(1 Cor. 15:3-7)

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once

Of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep.

He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also

Parting Command: Go Tell the Good News(Mark 16:14-18)

He appears as they are eating Jesus rebukes them for not believing before

seeing They are to teach others to believe without seeing

Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature That is us (Gentiles)

Regardless of Jew or Gentile He who believes and is baptized will be saved. He who does not believe will be condemned.

Notice the signs that will follow (v. 18)

Parting Command: Go Tell the Good News(Matt. 28:16-20)

The eleven went away into Galilee to the mountains which Jesus had appointed for them

When they saw Him They worshiped Him but some doubted

All authority has been given to Me in Heaven/earth Go Make disciples of ALL NATIONS Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to observe all things that I have

commanded you

Parting Command: Go Tell the Good News(Matt. 28:16-20)

And Lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

These last words had to be comforting! They now know He can’t be defeated. He can be anywhere (walked into a closed room!)

Parting Command: Go Tell the Good News(Luke 24:44-49)

This appears to be earlier when the first time Jesus appeared in the shut room with them (and Thomas)

These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."

He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures

Parting Command: Go Tell the Good News(Luke 24:44-49)

It was necessary for the Christ to 1)Suffer, 2)Die and 3)Rise from the dead on the third day

Repentance and remission of sins should be preached

In His name To ALL NATIONS Beginning at Jerusalem

You are witnesses of these things Behold I send the Promise of My Father upon you

But tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high!

Christ Ascends to Heaven(Mark 16:19-20; Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:9-

12)

There is a overlap between Luke’s writing in Luke and Acts 1.

Lu 24:50-51 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that

He was parted from them and carried up into Heaven.

Ac 1:9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

12)

Mark adds, “He sat down at the Right hand of God”And while they looked steadfastly toward Heaven

as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven,

will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."

Luke 24:52-53 They worshiped Him Returned to Jerusalem with Great Joy! Were continually in the temple praising and blessing God

Mr 16:20 And they went out Preached everywhere The Lord working with them and confirming the

word through the accompanying signs.
