CATHOLIC CHARITIES—A NEW VISION Catholic Social Services is one of the organizations assisted by your generous donations to the Catholic Charities Appeal. Every day, Catholic Social Services (CSS) provides help and creates hope for more than 3,500 people across our five-county region. They are homeless and hungry, at-risk youth and neglected children, struggling families and single parents, immigrants and persons with intellectual disabilities, pregnant teens and court-adjudicated delinquents. Now CSS has partnered with the Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC) to serve those who have served us—our military veterans. Working out of the former St. Cecilia School in Coatesville, Chester County, this joint initiative is a life-saving outreach to veterans and their families who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming so. Known as Operating Base Cecilia, the program assists veterans to locate and maintain permanent housing, provides them with furnishing, household goods and groceries, guides them in applying for benefits and offers job search assistance, including training, resume writing and interview skills. CSS and VMC have joined resources to do more good and to more effectively transform lives. They are dedicated to help our hometown heroes with compassion and dignity, but they need our help to do it well. Please be as generous as you can with your gift to the 2016 Catholic Charities Appeal.

Thank you for your support of our school’s Annual Fund. Your generosity provides the resources that make St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish School a premier learning center within our Archdiocese of Philadelphia as well as within Chester County. Our students thrive in a faith-filled, challenging academic environment where faith practice is woven into every aspect of the school life.

Every student benefits directly from your gift. One such benefit is increased technology. Keeping up with the newest learning techniques, each student in grades 5-8 has an iPad, students in grade 4 have laptops and kindergarten through grade 3 have iPad centers. Also our new dedicated science lab allows for hands-on learning for all the grades. To date, we have received $109,755 from 161 donors. If you have not already done so, you may still show your support by returning your commitment form with the return envelope you received at home. There are additional commitment forms and envelopes in the back of church. Our students, teachers, staff and principal deeply appreciate your kindness and your continued support of the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish School Annual Fund.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE

YEAR OF MERCY

Join us for an evening of discussion about what’s so “extraordinary” about the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy and how we can respond to the graces God is offering us. The program will be held here at St. Max on Tuesday, March 15th at 7:00 pm in the church. The speaker will be Meghan Cokeley, Director of the Office for the New Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. She is a Ph.D candidate in theology and is responsible for planning and coordinating our Archdiocesan observance of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. More information to follow.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT 2016

AT ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent, as well as Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten educational programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY “24 HOURS FOR THE LORD”

MARCH 4TH

24 Hours for the Lord (the 24 hrs. leading up to the Vigil Mass of the 4th Sunday of Lent) is an initiative of the Holy Father Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year. During this time, throughout the world, clergy and faithful will have the opportunity to pray before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. St. Max will hold this exercise in union with the worldwide Church. However, due to Confirmation on Saturday, March 5th, we will begin Adoration on Friday, March 4th, after morning Mass and conclude at 12 midnight with Benediction.

This Year of Mercy calls us to experience Our Lord’s mercy personally and to be His ambassadors to pray for others and bring His mercy to them. Coming before Jesus, the Lord of Mercy, in the Blessed Sacrament is a sacrifice of time and of our daily routine that develops our ability to love in His Name. Please take this call seriously and dedicate an hour (or at least a visit) on March 4th, bringing others with you.

Sign-ups sheets are available in the Narthex and specific parish groups/ministries will be called upon to come before Our Lord and pray for our parish families, the Church and our world.

“We constantly need to contemplate the mystery

of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity and

peace. Our salvation depends on it.”

—Pope Francis
