1,123 adult students improved their English skills in ENB-funded classes in 2016.
ENB’s mission is to increase access to high-quality English language learning opportunities for adult immigrants.
English for New Bostonians: Leading the Way in ESOL Education In 2016, ENB supported 29 programs (see list at left) that served 1,123 low- and very low-income learners, primarily parents and 73% women:
•Expansion and Innovation programs that add slots at various levels/locations, integrate technology, help students move ahead in the workforce, and drive best practices throughout the system; •Emerging programs, typically grassroots organizations that include staff from the same culture as their students, serve unique linguistic or geographically isolated populations, and benefit from sustained ENB assistance; •ESOL for Parents and Caregivers, which provides practical tools to help immigrant parents support their children’s educational success at home and at school. •ESOL for Entrepreneurs, our newest initiative that focuses on helping business owners learn English toward improving customer service, marketing, writing a business plan and accessing available resources.
An additional 58 students gained English and digital skills through English Innovations™ classes offered by ENB in partnership with several local and national partners.
105 volunteers recruited and trained by ENB conducted mock job interviews, tutored ESOL students 1-on-1 and assisted in classes at our funded programs.
As a leading voice in the ESOL field, one of ENB’s top priorities is to provide visibility to the immigrant workforce and the need for ESOL. Through our English Works Campaign, ENB held business information sessions across the state in 2016, promoting the mutual benefits and imperative of investing in ESOL to keep our state’s businesses and economy competitive.
ENB also produced two reports that bring data, trends and best practices to the adult education and workforce development fields:
ESOL for Entrepreneurs: Integrating English and Business Education to Enhance Small Business Success, commissioned by Mass Growth Capital Corporation, offered new insights on forging effective partnerships to serve immigrant entrepreneurs.
The inquiry found ENB’s initiative to be a viable economic development tool that can be scaled in immigrant-rich communities in MA and beyond.
Talking Jobs: Lessons from ENB’s 2016 ESOL Student Employment Survey, produced with the National Skills Coalition, highlights trends and policy/practice recommendations based on responses from 1,463 ESOL students at 39 community sites who reported on their employment circumstances and aspirations, and their co-workers’ needs for ESOL. Through the survey, ENB also identified over 700 businesses whose employees need English classes.
Students identified 700+ MA businesses that have employees who need English classes.
A medical doctor in Vietnam, Huong came to the U.S. with her two children in 2012 to reunite with other members of her family. She felt “depressed and unhappy” until starting English classes at the Asian American Civic Association, an ENB-funded ESOL program. Huong improved her English and learned about U.S. workplace culture, and soon secured a position as a case manager with Boston Senior Home Care. She visits both Vietnamese and English speaking patients.
“I am able to spend time learning English from my colleagues and clients. A great thing I got from them is that they appreciate and trust me when I talk to them.”
But, says Huong, “I didn’t want to stop my future there.” She also began to use her voice and experience in support of affordable ESOL classes, and joined ENB’s ESOL Student Leadership Initiative.
Huong’s reason is simple: “I hope that immigrants like me can be more confident to get a good job and begin a new life in America.”
