Late Civil War Battles and The Gettysburg Address

The Battle of Gettysburg• This was the turning

point of the war.• A three day battle in

Pennsylvania that crippled the Confederate Army.• Never again would

the South invade the North.

“Dixieland”• Listen to Steve Earle’s song Dixieland and read along with the

song.• On a separate sheet of paper, write down anything that you

find interesting about what the lyrics have to say about the battle of Gettysburg and Kilrain’s experience.

General Grant Wins at Vicksburg

• Vicksburg was one of the last Confederate holdouts on the Mississippi River.• The Union blasted

Vicksburg for 6 weeks.• With a Union victory

there, the Union had complete control of the Mississippi River.

The Gettysburg Address• Four Months after the

Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg, Lincoln dedicated a national cemetery at the Gettysburg battlefield. • He gave a speech at the

ceremony called the Gettysburg Address.• This address helped

unify the nation.

The Address• Identify the qualities of Lincoln’s speech that Edward Everett

most admired after reading “Another Perspective” on page 333.
