• Vicksburg was one of the last Confederate holdouts on the Mississippi River.• The Union blasted

Vicksburg for 6 weeks.• With a Union victory

there, the Union had complete control of the Mississippi River.

Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg, Lincoln dedicated a national cemetery at the Gettysburg battlefield. • He gave a speech at the

ceremony called the Gettysburg Address.• This address helped

unify the nation.
