• I have been presenting on iPads since 2011.

• Has all that can be said, been said?

• What is new?

• Chromebook sales have surpassed the iPad in education

Chromebooks — laptops running Google's Chrome OS as their operating systems — made significant strides, year over year. Chromebooks' market share jumped to 51% from 40%. Apple products, mostly iPads but also laptops and Mac desktops, declined to 24% from 32%. Windows-based machines remained steady at 23%.

Chromebooks• Cheaper than iPads

• New “flip” models (schools are not buying these)

• GAFE applications

• Music education options starting to roll out for these devices including SmartMusic, flat.io, SoundTrap, and the entire MusicFirst portfolio

• Web MIDI is finally here

• Schools are often investing in BOTH platforms.

• Android is coming to Chromebooks (replacing Chromebooks?) and will open new challenges for schools.

The iPad remains the best mobile platform for

music making and music

education, and may even be

the best overall platform.

Things to consider• Cost (and resale value)

• Ease of Use

• Reliability

• Shelf Life (All devices have EOL)

• Apps

• Accessories (cases, styluses, and music-specific accessories)

Buy a device for what it can do today, not what it might do tomorrow (or did yesterday)

• 4th Generation iPad Mini (September 2015)

• iPad Pro 9.7” (March/April 2016)

• iPhone 7 & 7S (September 2016)

Looking for a new iPad?• Honestly, wait.

• We don't know when the next device refresh will be. Fall might be a 10" iPad along with the iPhone 10th Anniversary model.

• We originally thought the next device refresh would be in March. The chatter has been awfully quiet if this is the case.

• Waiting for a device refresh can extend the life of a device a year or more

• If you can buy a used iPad Pro at a discount, consider it

• I am personally waiting to replace my iPad Air 2 with the next iPad Pro 12.9”
