CASE NARRATIVE FOR INORGANICS

Date Received: 12/31/92

Analysis;All samples were digested a second time for sodium due to

the laboratory control sample being out of the control limits.

Explanatory Notes;The inappropriate error flag, % Recovery Failed,

Repeat by Standard Additions, is due to a manufacturer's(Varian) software error. The software is designed to followthe analysis protocol for USEPA Contract Laboratory ProgramILM01.0. Following this protocol, method of standard additionsis not required for samples demonstrating sample absorbance orconcentration less than 50% of the spike absorbance orconcentration; however, the Varian software prints this flag,regardless of sample absorbance or concentration, wheneverthe percent recovery is below 85% or above 115%.

Varian has been informed of this problem and hascommunicated that the problem will be resolved in a futuresoftware revision. The software is needed to operate theinstrument and to control the automatic spiking function ofthe autosampler. Since the software will not permit thiserror to be disabled, data that demonstrates this error willbe manually corrected on the raw data by the analyst.

Calibration Standards;Instrument calibration standards are prepared monthly from stock

solutions purchased from Spex or Baker chemical.Total ICP integration time is 24 seconds.
