GrandSilenceisanimprovisedresponsebyUnPianoTriotothelandmarkrecordingofJontySemper(UK),Kenotaphion(2001,Locus+).Sempercollectedallsurvivingrecordingsofthetwo-minutesilencesattheArmisticeDayandRemembranceSundayceremoniesattheCenotaphinLondonfrom1929to2000.GrandSilenceisanimprovisedthrenodytothisremarkablememorial.

UnPianoisDerekPascoe(saxophone)UK/Australia,JohannesS.Sistermanns(electronics,voice)Germany,andGabriellaSmart(synthesizer)Australia.TheTriowasestablishedin2017bythreemusiciansfromdiversebackgroundswhoareunitedbytheloveoffreelyimprovisedmusic.Throughexploringacousticandmanipulatedsoundstocreateatexturalmelodicnarrativethatexploresemotionalboundaries,theycreateanintimateconnectiontotheirimmediateperformancespace.UnPianohaveperformedGrandSilenceinAdelaide,PolandandBerlin.IthasdevelopedintoapoignantcommemorationofthepeoplewholosttheirlivesinWorldWars1and2.Furtherinformation:JontySemperspentfouryearsmakingKenotaphion.TheearliestsurvivingrecordingisfromaBritishMovie-tonenewsreelof1929,thelastis2000.Theremembranceceremonywasinventedbyagovernmentcommitteein1919tocommemoratethefirstanniversaryofArmisticeDayandthetwominutesilencewassuggestedbySirPercyFitzpatrick,formerhighcommissionerofSouthAfrica.Theentirecountrycametoastandstillonthe11thhourofthe11thday,withtramsandtrainsstopping,telephoneexchangescutoff,andfactorymachineryshutdown.

DerekPascoehasbeenplayingsaxophoneprofessionallyforover40yearsincludingregularTV,radiobroadcastsandstudiorecordingsacrossarangeofgenres.HewasamemberofacclaimedpopgroupFlintlock,whoproduced5albumsandwerefeaturedweeklyonUKnationaltelevisionincludingTopofthePopsandTomorrow’sPeople.PascoehasplayedatmanyofLondon’sprestigiousJazzvenuesincludingRonnieScott’s,BassClefandtheJazzCafe.HehastouredextensivelythroughoutEurope,JapanandmostrecentlyinAustraliawithTheCommitments.In1998PascoemovedtoAustraliafromLondon.HecompletedaMasterofMusicattheElderConservatoriumAdelaidein2010,exploringperformanceandspontaneousimprovisationtechniques.Since2000,hehaslecturedinJazztheoryandImprovisationacrosstheJazz,ClassicalandContemporarydisciplinesattheElderConservatoriuminAdelaide.Pascoehasanextensiverecording,arrangingandcomposinghistorythatincludestheNationalYouthJazzOrchestraUK,JacquelineDankworthUK,ShaolinAfronauts,theZeitgeistOrchestra,JohnAueandtheYearlings.HisworkinfilmincludesimprovisedperformanceforthefilmdocumentaryTheseHeathenDreams,withmusiccomposedbyMikeDarrenanddirectedbyAnn

Tsoulis.In2016hecomposedandperformedthemusictoaccompanythesilentmasterpieceTheCrowdaspartoftheAPRASilentRemastersseries.In2014,PascoecomposedmusictoDylanThomas’sUnderMilkWood,whichreceiveditsworldpremiereintheElderHallLunchtimeSeriesinAdelaide.AsubsequentCDrecordingwasreleasedin2015byFinepoets.RecentliveperformancesincluderegularappearancesatCreativeOriginalMusicAdelaideandElderHallLunchtimeSeriesconcerts.PascoeiscurrentlycomposingmusictothetextfromJamesJoyce’sUlysses.
