Sierra Leone

• Officially the Republic of Sierra Leone

• Tropical Climate• Population of 6.4 million• Freetown is the capital and also the

largest city and economic center• English is the official language

• The country is very rich in minerals, so they rely much on mining

• Among top ten diamond producing nations in the world

• Archaeological finds show that Sierra Leone has been inhabited continuously for at least 2,500 years

Women of Sierra Leone• Sierra Leone’s constitution provides for

equal rights for woman but in practice woman face both legal and societal discrimination

• Woman do not have equal access to education, economic opportunities, health facilities, or social freedoms

• Woman’s rights and status under traditional law very significantly depending on the ethnic group to which they belong

• Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission(TRC) was created out of Sierra Leone’s peace process

• Was mandated to establish an impartial record of the abuses that occurred in the war

• Violence against woman, especially wife beating is common, domestic violence is not recognized as a societal problem, however rape is

• There is a significant amount of prostitution

• Rebel forces used rape as a terror tactic and forced woman and girls to act as sexual slaves

• Sexual violence was used in a widespread and systematic way as a weapon and woman were raped in extremely brutal ways

• Woman and children of Sierra Leone known to be the principal war victims, often submitted to rape, sexual slaves, forced labour, torture, and mutilation

• Although Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) is still practiced in many societies

• FGM is seen as damaging to both the physical and psychological health of woman- it is condemned by international health experts
