SWALS= Students Without Language Sec4on
• “SWALS are pupils whose mother tongue/dominant language is an official language of an EU Member State (with the excep4on of Irish and Maltese) but for whom no language sec4on in their mother tongue/dominant language (L1) exists in their school.”
• SWALS are normally enrolled in one of the working language (DE, EN, FR) sec4ons. The language of the sec4on is the pupil’s L2. SWALS can also be enrolled in the language sec4on of the host country on condi4on that no addi4onal costs are created. Their L2 should be English, French or German.

What the SWALS teachers say
• “In nursery cycle are a lot of children, who are born in Belgium or other countries but not in our home country and their language knowledge is not always in mother tongue level.”
• “In primary cycle children have possibility to learn mother tongue every day. It is very good.”
• “I feel a lack of 4me for primary year 1 and year 2 children, because their lessons are 30 minutes long and no break between the lessons.”
• “our opinion is that SWALS children learning results in primary and in secondary cycle mainly are good”
Conclusions
• The number of SWALS children are increasing in the European School system
