Technology and Me

A personal timeline of educational technology

OverviewMy name is Katrina Johnson.

I started school in 1994 in Kahalu'u, Hawai'i.

I graduated from Castle High School in 2007 in Kaneohe, Hawai'i.

I first went to college at UH Manoa in 2007.

When I finish my degree, I hope to become a high school math teacher.

My definition of educational technology

I think of educational technology as incorporating technology in

the classroom in a way that enhances the students learning

in the most efficient way possible.

Kindergarten technologyFloppy disks were probably the most advanced form of

portable storage.Personal computers at home were fairly common.Played games like KidPix in the computer lab.Had very old Macintoshs (not Macs) in our lab.

High school technologyFlash drives are the most

popular form of portable memory.Laptops are becoming popular,

although not extremely common among high school students.Students are expected to have

access to and knowledge of the internet and word processing.Email is a common form of

communication.Photoshop.

College TechnologyLaptops are many times

expected of students.Courses are offered onlineAssignments and quizzes

may be turned in via online class sites.iClickers are used for

attendance and answering in-class questions.

A vivid technology learning experience

Traveling the world from comfort of your class.

Using Google satellite maps to walk the streets of other countries

A technology I want to use in my classroom

I really hope to be able to use smart boards in my class at some point in my career.

My vision of the classroom of the future

I would like to see the students have interactive desks that the student could just plug their memory stick into. The surface would be like a mini smart board, and the stick would hold all their personal settings.

A challenge for teaching

Since I plan to teach in public schools here in Hawai'i, money will definitely be one of the biggest challenges when trying to incorporate technology into my lessons. The state just doesn't have the money to pay for a lot of up to date technology in schools.

Words of wisdomIt is the supreme

art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. *Albert Einstein*
