Equitable Conversations When engaged in equitable conversation, everyone feels that they are able to get their point across, and that their view is considered just as much as everyone else’s. Everyone should feel that they are being respected; no one should feel hurt or belittled. Everyone feels good about the conversation, even if everyone doesn’t agree. – 2011-2012 YAC Member

Respect Fellow Participants Certain participants are viewed as incapable of contributing valuable information

Listen and value the opinions of all – keep an “open mind”

Ignore the ideas of others’

Awareness of vocabulary & tone of voice

Use derogatory language, such as the R-Word & other offensive language

Use different models in expressing complex ideas

Sole usage of 1 type of presentation or activity

Impose rules on the group, especially when made by one person

Ask colleagues to share their thoughts if they have been quiet or disengaged
