My Approach/View/Bias to Designing this

CourseThe Most Powerful Learning is ExperientialProject-Based Learning Engages and

Motivates learners while offering lots of different opportunities to learn material and express knowledge and skills

Service Learning helps students “transfer” and apply what they have learned as well as giving reason for learning

Thus – Field Experience is

KEYFirst third of semester prepares your for

the second two thirds– FIELD EXPERIENCEPlanning, implementing and evaluating

your OWN science unit with a teaching partner and cooperating teacher

We meet as a class until Feb 28– then we stop meeting on campus as you begin teaching twice a week while I support and observe as you teach until Dec. 15!

Building on the Past

Cooperating teachers are my PARTNERS and most have worked with me (and my students) many times!

They are eager to work with and make you a part of their classroom

Many are Carthage gradsThey have high expectations!

Project-Based – Challenges and

Benefits It’s experiential -- not just the teaching but

also the planning, collaborating, and “bending at the knees”

Engages the students – gets them actively involved, there is an “arc” – beginning, middle and end – which is gratifying; AND there is a purpose for learning activities

Learning from “failure” – looking for successes in handling difficulties and the unexpected

Service Learning Projects
