DESCRIPTION

Design for London

Who and what

+

Design for London was established in 2007 as a consolidation of the Mayor’s design-focused resource; to push forward the Mayor’s commitment to excellent design and the making of good places.

We were a unique team, mostly design professionals, with a strong reputation and a good record of achievement. With detailed knowledge of London’s places, with area strategy and vision setting capability, design skills, and a web of relationships across the city.

Adam Towle, Alison Mayer, Angela Spencer, Daniel Nordh, Edmund Bird, Jamie Dean, Levent Kerimol, Louise Duggan, Maria Lisogorskaya, Mark Brearley, Mark Smith, Matthew Carrington, Matthew Murphy, Matthew Turner, Maurizio Biadene, Paul Harper, Ruby Casey-Knight, Sarah Considine, Tim Rettler, Tina Jadav, Tobias Goevert.

Working on behalf of the Mayor of London as part of the GLA, and with London, to shape a better city. Collaborating with almost all London boroughs, Transport for London, and other assorted organisations.

Some of our work was London wide; about ideas, policy, guidance, story-telling and enthusiasm building.

build a web and collaborate

be opportunistic and seize the moment

telling stories and minting phrases

We focused most of our effort on projects in places: catching and steering, telling stories, giving advice and helping with process. We helped push forward and shape 10 policy and guidance initiatives, more than a dozen strategies, more than 50 masterplans, 80 development projects, over 100 public space projects.

This was all about shaping places. We were helping make good change happen in more than a hundred places across London.

Place shaping

Realism

The Mayor’s resources came together. We then had, under one roof, London’s strongest concentration of knowledge on place shaping, regeneration and housing.

City Hall had people with detailed knowledge of London’s places, with area strategy and vision setting capability, design and regeneration skills, and a web of relationships across the city. This was a great opportunity.

High street places

6,460 businesses

79,425 jobs

Many of London's high streets

are along the most ancient

roads in the capital. London is

structured around these

linear arteries with high

footfall - it is where the life is

in the city.

London’s high streets account

for just 3.6% of the road

network, but represent some of

the most important spaces in

the city.

Surveys tell us that over 90%

of Londoners value their

high street and want to see

it improved.

Over half of Londoners do not

leave their local area daily.

Our high streets are where last

summer’s riots were focuses, a

tough reminder of their

significance.

They are also the places where

so much of what we all share

comes together; they are the

focus of our daily public life.

Outside the centre, more

than half of London's jobs

are on high streets, and two

thirds of people live within

five minutes walk of one.

47% of businesses outside

Central London are on a

high street.

1.45 million employees work

on or within 200 metres of a

high street.

There is huge growth

capacity: nearly half of

London's identified

developable land is within

200m of a high street.

These are our biggest

collection of places that are

good to grow and ready to

go.
