What Is Dance And Movement?

Two parts of the same continuum

Movement embodies the informal expression of ideas and feeling based on ordinary human motion

Dance is based on formal use of pattern, rhythm, design, and style

MOVEMENT Locomotor

Movement from one place to another Non Locomotor

Originates from a stationary position

When movement is repeated in a set sequence, it defines a pattern and becomes a dance.

Rhythm plays a large role in dance

FORM AND FUNCTION

BALLET: it has very structured moves, graceful and strong. It uses music and dance to tell stories and the dancers have the ability to transport the audience to another world.

JAZZ: it is a fun dance style that relies heavily on improvisation and originality. It is very expressive and it uses bold, dramatic body movements.

HIP HOP: it involves various moves such as breaking, popping, locking and krumping.

MODERN: it rejects the strict rules of classical ballet and it is very expressive

FORM AND FUNCTION CONTINUED...

Folk dance: square dancing and clogging

Belly dance: rolling movements of the hips and abdomen

Country and western: line dancing

Latin: very sensual and lots of hip movement

Tap: exciting form of dance where dancers where special shoes with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet as drums to make rhythmic patterns and beats

Swing: very lively and lots of spinning and jumping
